How to Create Your Dream Bespoke Wedding Dress

Niamh Lynch is a designer who cut her teeth working with John and Simone Rocha, managing their collections, sampling and design room, creating clothes for runway shows and bespoke clients for almost ten years. When the Rochas made the decision to take their main studios to London, Lynch knew that it was time to follow her true passion and go out on her own, vowing to create a bridalwear collection that offered something different and unique.

After taking some time to work in bridal boutiques in Dublin, learning about the market, the processes and translating her high-fashion and couture skills to bridalwear, Lynch discovered one roadblock that many customers were facing – they couldn’t find their perfect dress. They may find that they loved the upper body of one dress, but the skirt of another, or they loved the shape of a strapless style but wished it had more coverage. Finding a dress that speaks to a bride’s personality and personal style, that they can wear again in the future (or deconstruct to create separates or an entirely new and wearable dress) is a long and sometimes fruitless process as off-the-rack options become increasingly limited for modern brides.

And so the idea for Bespoke Bridal was born, “to help brides get over the stumbling block of off-the-rack wedding dress shopping,” Lynch allows brides to create their dream dress from scratch. The USP? The changeability of the garments. Wanting to offer brides the opportunity to create their perfect dress, Lynch designed a capsule collection of mix-and-match separates that results in 20 different possible looks. When visiting Lynch in her studio, brides have the opportunity to try on a range of different styles and create their perfect silhouette, matching one top with a different skirt, changing sleeve-length or adding extra layers, even choosing from a number of different fabrics.

While Lynch has found that most of her brides still want the traditional ivory dress, they are now interested in more modern shapes – opting for a versatile look with extra drama (this is thanks to social media, says Lynch) and even a look that can be transformed after the ceremony with the option to change for the evening celebrations with removable or interchangeable layers.

Lynch’s pieces are all made-to-measure, handsewed by her team of seamstresses in Dublin. They are not mass produced meaning you’re getting a totally bespoke piece, custom made with care and love and tailored just for you to ensure the perfect fit.

From start to finish the process is personalised. Once a bride makes an enquiry, Lynch will send on a pre-appointment form to be filled out with details of the wedding day (venue, time of year…) as well as some questions on style (style icons, initial ideas for dress shape). Lynch will then put together a personalised presentation for the bride-to-be, complete with a moodboard of the wedding day with a range of styles and fabrics which begins the process of creating the dress.

Lynch recommends for brides to make their first appointment between 6-8 months before the wedding. Brides will meet Lynch a number of times in her Marlay Park studio during the process for a series of fittings after the initial consultation. Prices start at €2,500 and the average dress comes in at around €3,500. To enquire, visit www.bespokebridal.ie or email info@bespokebridal.ie. A once-in-a-lifetime occasion calls for a once-in-a-lifetime dress, and that’s exactly what you get with Bespoke Bridal.
