From Margo’s Got Money Troubles To The Drama: 11 New Shows And Films For April

Crime, thrillers, reality, cults, comedies and romcoms – here’s what to watch on Now, Netflix, Prime Video and AppleTV – as well as Zendaya on the big and small screen …

The ‘Burbs | Now

A dramedy adaptation of the 1989 film with Tom Hanks, you can binge this eight episode series now starring Jack Whitehall (who we loved and hated in equal measure recently in Malice) and Keke Palmer as a young couple and new parents who relocate to a quaint cul-de-sac in “The Safest Town in America.” Their quiet life quickly unravels when a mysterious man moves into the creepy Victorian house across the street that’s been abandoned for twenty years. Home alone on maternity leave, Keke’s character finds friendship with a ragtag group of quirky neighbours who join her in investigatory misadventures, and she must decide how far she’s willing to go to protect her family and her community. We’re here for the leads’ chemistry and comedic timing. Keke is a triple threat and can do no wrong.

Rooster | Now

This character-driven comedy out now has been compared to Ted Lasso thanks to co-creator Bill Lawrence, with The Irish Examiner calling it “a shot of joy”. Steve Carell is back to his best, and the show features a strong supporting cast including John C McGinley (Scrubs) and Mark Ruck (Succession). The show centres on navigating second chances and personal reinvention later in life as it explores a complicated father-daughter relationship.

Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat | Prime Video

From the creators of the runaway hit Jury Duty in 2023 comes a fresh installment that trades the courtroom for the conference room, bringing the series’ signature hidden-camera format to a make-believe corporate retreat where only one person doesn’t know that everyone else is acting. All eight episodes are available now, with stars James Marsden and Ronald Gladden back for two bonus reunion episodes on April 10.

Dara O’Briain – Re:Creation | Prime Video

After an 18-month tour in Ireland and the UK running from January 2025 to March this year, the beloved comedian brings his latest stand-up show to the small screen, with the special available now. In his last stand-up tour post-Covid in 2022 titled So … Where Were We?, he recounted the emotional story of finding his birth mother, which he described as ‘like my version of the film Philomena‘ while this follow-up is the happier search for his birth father, which he compares to the movie Elf. It’s likely to have you in tears either way.

Big Mistakes | Netflix

Following his directorial debut with 2024’s Good Grief, Dan Levy returns to our screens on April 9 as star, showrunner and executive producer in his second original scripted series since the Emmy-winning sitcom Schitt’s Creek with his father Eugene, the late, great Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy. This eight episode series follows another hilariously dysfunctional family as siblings get in over their heads when a misguided theft for their dying grandmother accidentally pulls them into the world of organised crime. The impressive cast also features Rachel Sennott (I Love LA, Bottoms), Taylor Ortega (The Four Seasons, Another Simple Favour), Laurie Metcalf (Hacks, Lady Bird) and Elizabeth Perkins (Weeds, Big, Miracle on 34th Street).

Unchosen | Netflix

This six-part British psychological thriller, premiering on April 21, tells the story of a young mother from a conservative Christian cult who starts a risky affair with an escaped prisoner who claims to be a saviour – played by Irish actor Fra Fee. Also starring Molly Windsor (The Runaways, Three Girls), Asa Butterfield (Sex Education), Christopher Eccleston (The Leftovers, 28 Days Later, the list goes on!). Created by Julie Gearey (Prisoners Wives, Intergalactic), the miniseries was inspired by experiences of former cult members who she met online. There are reportedly over 2,000 cults in the UK alone, but there are likely many more, according to an academic specialist who worked on the series. A riveting watch.

The Testaments | Disney+

Based on Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novels, this coming-of-age drama is an evolution of The Handmaid’s Tale that ended last year after six seasons, set 15 years later. The inimitable Ann Dowd returns as Aunt Lydia, a tyrant who eventually has to come to terms with the horrors being inflicted on women in Gilead, so we find out more about how she wants to overthrow the patriachy from the inside. You may recognise the leading actress Chase Infiniti from the Oscar-winning film One Battle After Another, who’s sure to go far. The first three episodes will be released on April 8, followed weekly.

Malcolm In The Middle: Life’s Still Unfair | Disney+

This four-part reunion on April 10 takes place a decade after the seventh season of the original comedy series seen through the eyes of the middle child, a reluctant child genius, which is also worth a watch on Disney+. Malcolm’s parents Hal and Lois celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary, with chaos and hilarity ensuing once again after quite a hiatus. The OG cast of Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek reprise their iconic roles, which is no mean feat as Muniz famously left acting at the height of his career to pursue his dream of becoming a racing car driver, making it to NASCAR. This is one for all the family.

Margo’s Got Money Troubles | Apple TV

This dramedy created by Emmy winner David E Kelley, the brains behind Big Little Lies, Ally McBeal and many more hit shows, is based on Rufi Thorpe’s 2024 novel. Follow the tumultuous journey of the daughter of a Hooters waitress and former professional wrestler, a college dropout and aspiring writer who gets pregnant after an affair with her professor, turning to OnlyFans to support herself. Set to premiere on April 15, the stellar cast includes Elle Fanning, Nicole Kidman, Michelle Pfeiffer, Greg Kinnear, Nick Offerman and Northern Irish actress Thaddea Graham. Early buzz marks it as a strong Emmy 2026 contender and it has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score upon its debut at SXSW, so it’s one to watch.

Outcome | Apple TV

This dark comedy film debuting on April 10 is directed and co-produced by Jonah Hill, who also stars alongside Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Kaia Gerber, Laverne Cox, Martin Scorsese and Keanu Reeves in the lead role as a beloved Hollywood star tied up in an extortion plot that could end his career. Hoping to identify his blackmailer, he embarks on a soul-searching journey to make amends with anyone he’s wronged. We would watch Keanu watch paint dry, so we’re sold!

The Drama | In Cinemas

In what’s been described as a “Zendaya-thon” for the Emmy winner’s landmark year starring in The Drama with Robert Pattinson, Euphoria with Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi from April 12, with her fiancé Tom Holland (or husband, depending on reports) in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated The Odyssey, both out this summer, plus the final installment of the Dune trilogy with Timothée Chalamet at the end of the year – we simply can’t get enough of her. The romcom drama in cinemas now is courting controversy as it seems light-hearted, about a happily engaged couple being put to the test when a revelation sends their wedding week off the rails, but the underlying theme deals with hot button issues in the US. It’s definitely divisive …
