Three Irish tablescaping pros share their tips for a pretty Valentine’s Day setting…
1. Embrace pink and red
Professional tablescaper and event planner Maria Reidy loves the juxtaposition of red and pink, which works especially in a romantic candlelit background. Her “Love is Love” Valentine’s Day collection, from Signature Editions has a collection of pieces, from stylish bud vases to pink charger plates, which help to create an intimate Valentine’s dinner; www.signature-editions.ie.
Tara O’Connor, founder of The Designed Table, is also a fan of this colour combination. “You don’t need to cover your table in pink or red to create a romantic spread. A few carefully chosen accents — like a vase of roses, a handwritten menu, and rose-tinted glassware — will work without all the extra fuss.” To achieve this look, The Designed Table’s linen and cotton Pantone Collection is perfect. “Our Rose Pink and Candy Red collections work beautifully together. Finish with a Red Bow or Gold Leaf napkin ring and you’ve got a table set for old-fashioned romance,” explains Tara; www.thedesignedtable.com.
2. Avoid using harsh overhead lighting
“Instead, I use moody ambient light from our LED cordless lamps and lots of warm candle light,” explains Rebecca Roe, creative director of Hedgeroe Home. “I like to play with heights, using both low tealights and taller tapered candles. Our pink lacquer twisted tapered candles are the perfect addition to a Valentine’s tablescape.”
3. Add flowers or foliage
To break up the formality and sterility of any table, adding flowers or foliage does not necessarily mean extra expense. Rebecca explains: “For a dining table you don’t want anything too tall or dense as it will interfere with guests. I like to make low arrangements which can be moved easily. Bud vases are also very pretty, I like to use small jam jars as bud vases as they are a good height and something we all have at home.”
4. Be creative with your tablecloth
If it is a special occasion, using a tablecloth can add a fun base colour to any scheme, though classicists will appreciate pure white Irish linen. “For our Valentine’s table design this year we used our Salt Marsh Fabric in dusty pink. It works in lieu of a tablecloth as does a throw which can add texture and detail to any table,” explains Rebecca. www.hedgeroe.com.
