Dana Thomas Shares Her Tips For Sustainable Style

The bestselling author, editor and podcast host outlined five ways she recycles, rewears and rethinks fashion choices …

To coincide with World Earth Day on Saturday, April 22, Brown Thomas Arnotts has launched its first Positive Change Festival, which includes a series of beauty and wellness experiences. “Our aim is to have though-provoking conversations and highlight ways to make more conscious consumer choices,” explains Brown Thomas Arnotts Head of Sustainability, Diana Geraghty.

The festival began with an inspiring panel discussion with British Vogue’s European Sustainability Editor and renowned author, Dana Thomas, who joined Brown Thomas Arnotts Womenswear Buying Manager, Brittany Bennett, and sustainability journalist Jo Linehan to discuss how positive changes can make a significant impact within luxury fashion.

Dana, who has written the must-reads Deluxe, How Fashion Lost Its Lustre and Fashionopolis, The Price of Fast Fashion & The Future of Clothes, outlined five ways she recycles, rewears and rethinks fashion choices:

1. Buy better, buy less. A devotee of Stella McCartney, Dana regularly wears Stella McCartney suits for work events and treasures pieces by Tom Ford, Gucci and Alaia she has had in her wardrobe since the early 1980s. “I am a huge fan of organic cotton shirts – my default wardrobe is a pair of old Levi’s, a white t-shirt by Alabama Chanin and some loafers.”

2. Be inventive if something goes wrong: “When travelling a much-loved shoe by Christian Louboutin was spoiled in a suitcase disaster involving some olive oil. A friend advised that I add olive oil to the other shoe, so that the pair would have the same patina! You get the picture – if a white shirt is spoiled by red wine, use dye to save the shirt, rather than throw it away.”

3. Wash in a cold water, short cycle: “Long washes and regular spinning can reduce the lifespan of clothes.”

4. Keep clothes in circulation: “This is the original meaning of circular fashion. I believe in wearing my clothes on rotation.”

5. Dress up older pieces: “Brooches are back, as are scarves. I believe in dressing up clothes with creative accessories.”
