Audiences are lapping up The Five-Star Weekend, the eight-part series based on Elin Hilderbrand’s best-selling novel of the same name. The Jennifer Garner-led TV adaptation racked up one billion viewing minutes in its first week on streaming platform Peacock (in Ireland, it’s available to view on NOW TV). Set on the bougie island of Nantucket, the fashion in the show often shouts. There are Toteme silk sets, Tory Burch logo straw bags, Oscar de la Renta dresses and Ralph Lauren shirting. The clothing choices run the gamut from rosé lush to classic old money.
Then there’s Chloë Sevigny. The 1990s indie film darling was, undoubtedly, a jarring choice for Hilderbrand’s world of commercial comfort-reads. “It’s my gift to my mother,” Sevigny recently said of starring in the TV series. Undoubtedly, her status as someone who rarely puts a foot wrong in the sartorial stakes will entice a certain cohort to tune in. Even amongst the wash of age-appropriate printed midi dresses, there are echoes of Sevigny’s cool factor in her character Tatum McKenzie’s costume choices.

A floral tea dress, from Reformation, has a vintage look which is on-brand: Sevigny is a thrifting fanatic. “I grew up in Connecticut, and surrounded by a lot of wealth, and so the local charity thrifts were full of really nice, slightly worn pieces,” Sevigny has said. On a girls’ shopping trip, Sevigny wears a nostalgic pin-tuck pink slip dress – an apt nod to her roots as a party girl in 1990s New York.

It’s Sevigny’s off-duty look – a yellow cotton shirt, which reminds of London brand With Nothing Underneath, and canvas tennis shoes – that feels like a modern twist on coastal dressing. An ironic amount of prep, without the twee.

In the show’s final scenes, Tatum’s clothing choice reflects another of Sevigny’s long-held wardrobe themes: borrowed-from-the-boys dressing. Her boyish jean shorts lead the charge, offset by a woven bag in the vein of cult favourite Dragon Diffusion. It’s a low-key choice, but one that will speak to the Sevigny acolytes who are tuning in.
