What’s the verdict? …
VIBE Colourful, upbeat coastal retreat with picture postcard views of Dublin Bay.
NEED TO KNOW The hotel comprises four townhouses seamlessly stitched together by owner Fla Larkin who has just completed the first phase of an ambitious renovation project.
BACK STORY As a former finishing school for young ladies in the 19th century, the hotel’s fictional muse is Adelaide Haddington, an adventurer and bon viveur whose story inspired the vintage-style interiors.
ROOMS The original 55 rooms have been reduced to 40, allowing for larger bedrooms and bathrooms. Choose from a range of Cosy, Classic, Heritage, Deluxe, Loft, Nook and Signature rooms and suites. I stayed in the Adelaide, defined by its high ceilings, sweeping sea views and sophisticated details. A curvaceous velvet sofa, pretty window seats, brass mirrors, handmade lampshades, William Morris wallpaper, leather accents by Milan-based Irish leathersmith Mark Inglis and a fabulous mini bar all added to a supremely comfortable stay.
DINING Breakfast is served in the relaxed, sociable Oliveto, open for all-day dining with an authentic Italian-inspired menu of small plates, pasta and seafood dishes. For al fresco dining and drinks, try the Platform, offering light snacks. The Parlour is a salubrious cocktail bar that takes in the arty lobby, library and drawing room. Meeting spaces for corporate functions are available.
DO Enquire about (free) membership with no catches, offering discounts on dining, room rates and invites to members-only events. Join the hotel’s swim club which includes an interesting “passport” with benefits. Borrow one of the posh pastel bikes to tootle to gourmet Glasthule or along the Metals, a direct path to Dalkey.
DON’T Miss the weekly farmer’s market at the People’s Park or Camilla Taaffe’s shop, Heirlooms Antiques on George’s Street.
VERDICT Time beautifully spent. Overnight stays with breakfast costs from €165. @haddingtonhousehotel
