Five Cafés To Work From When You Need a Change of Scenery

Working from home has become the norm for many but sometimes you need a change of scenery – here’s where to go …

Offices might be back, but for many of us, working from home has become an ingrained part of our working week, be it hybrid or fully remote. For those that find they need a change of scenery on occasion, this selection of Dublin cafés has all your working needs covered.

The Twirly Gate, Chapelizod

Just a little over a year after opening, The Twirly Gate café in the Liffey-side village of Chapelizod has garnered quite the following. Its close proximity to the pedestrian gate (hence the name) of the Phoenix Park makes it the perfect spot to set up for the day with ample opportunities to stretch your legs whether in the park or along the Liffey. Coffee is from Dublin-based roastery Farmhand Coffee and there is a superb selection of sweet and savoury snacks to fuel your creativity. Open 8am – 5pm midweek and 9am – 5pm on weekends. www.thetwirlygate23.ie

Storyboard, Clancy Quay

In another Liffey-side location, Storyboard in Dublin 8 is a great option for those looking for quality caffeine and food to fuel your working day. The homemade beans on toast will provide a protein packed boost and the mushroom toastie with caramelised onions and béchamel will brighten an otherwise dull working day. Open seven days a week from 9am – 3.30pm. www.storyboardcoffee.com

Proper Order Coffee Co., Smithfield

A word of warning for those who choose to perch in Proper Order for the day – get there early to avail of the most decadent pastries known to man, and try to keep said decadent pastries to a minimum as they are firmly in the ‘treat’ category and virtually impossible to resist. That said, we all need treats and when the quality is this good, who are we to judge. Baked goods come courtesy of sister business, No Messin Bakery who incidentally run a monthly pie sale for collection from Proper Order that usually sells out instantly. Open from 7am – 5pm weekdays and 9am – 5pm on Saturdays. www.properordercoffeeco.com

Hatch Coffee, Glasthule and Blackrock

Pouring 3fe coffee in both of its Dublin locations, Hatch Coffee is another one for the early birds opening its doors at 7am. Daytime hydration won’t be an issue with Hatch Coffee’s eco-conscious water tank filled with ceramic filtered, purified water. Customers are encouraged to bring their own bottles and refill as needed. Open 7am – 5pm on weekdays, 8am – 5pm on weekends. www.hatchcoffee.ie

Grove Road, Rathmines

If working with a spot of intermittent people watching is your thing then Grove Road has you covered. Nab a counter seat overlooking Rathmines Road or the canal and gorge on highly recommended avocado toast with feta as a reward to oneself for being so diligent. Be warned, the option to add bacon should be considered at length as it gives the word ‘crispy’ new meaning. Tooth shattering bacon might not be for me but I’m all for the sausage rolls, the excellent coffee and the food in general. Open from 8am – 4pm weekdays and 9am – 5pm weekends. www.groveroadcafe.ie

Side note: Want to combine your work day with some Swedish meatballs and a spot of shopping? Ikea is the place for you. It might not be for everyone, but the café boasts an abundance of space with communal desks, power points and all the WiFi you could wish for. Maybe they are in fact aiming to encourage a ‘work from Ikea’ strategy … www.ikea.ie
