Actress Lily Collins On Her Playful Approach To Dressing

The Golden Globe-nominated actress and Emily In Paris star tells us about what fashion means to her, how roles and costumes inspire her own wardrobe, her new home in Copenhagen and more …

Congratulations on becoming Zalando’s first global brand ambassador! What excites you most about stepping into this role?

It’s exciting to partner with a platform that champions individuality while making great style accessible. Becoming Zalando’s first global ambassador feels like a natural extension of the way I think about getting dressed – intentional, creative and open to inspiration.

You’re known for your expressive, playful approach to dressing, both on and off screen. Are there particular moments or moods that make you feel most inspired to experiment with your style?

I’ve always felt fashion is another form of storytelling. It can be expressive and magical or subtle and understated. It’s a great way to express your personality and I’ve always had a playful approach to what I wear. I draw inspiration from my mood, the city I’m in, my schedule for the day or the event I’m going to, or the character I’m playing. Some of my favourite fashion moments have been when I’m feeling creative and a little spontaneous. I like feeling like myself but also wearing things that are unexpected and fun.

“What do I wear?” is often the first question we ask ourselves each day, is it also an important part of your preparation for new roles or auditions – how does the outfit choice help you get in the right headspace?

When I’m preparing for a new role or going into an audition, the outfits help me dive further into the character. Clothing holds so much intention and purpose for a character and the project overall. It informs so much about the character and allows me to further immerse myself into their headspace so I can step into the role in an instinctive way.

I’ve learned that getting dressed is easier when you stop trying to force something into working for you.

Playing Emily Cooper has taken you across Europe and immersed you in distinct fashion cultures – from Parisian elegance to Italian glamour. Is there a particular look from the show that stands out as especially memorable or fun for you?

There’s been so many unforgettable looks throughout the seasons but one of my all-time favourites was the black and white striped catsuit and hat Emily wore to the masquerade ball in season 4 that was designed by Harris Reed. Harris is a friend of mine, so it was a dream to work with him on that look.

We all face that moment of panic in front of the wardrobe where we think: ‘I have nothing to wear.’ How do you personally handle that dilemma, and what is your tip for someone trying to find their style again?

My tip for anyone trying to find their style again is to start small and to lean into your personal preferences and personality. I’ve learned that getting dressed is easier when you stop trying to force something into working for you. Looking at the day ahead and wearing pieces you naturally gravitate towards will help you feel confident going into any situation. Style should be a natural expression of yourself.

You’ve recently settled in Copenhagen, a city known for its effortless, functional take on style. Has living in the Nordics influenced your wardrobe or your mindset around fashion?

Spending time in Copenhagen has definitely influenced how I dress. There’s such an ease to the way people approach style there that I’ve come to love and appreciate. Everything feels intentional and functional but not over the top. There’s a quiet confidence to dressing there and I’ve really incorporated that into my overall style.
