A Family Home In Hampstead Defined By Colour And Functionality

See inside the cinema in the attic …

Finding beauty in the everyday is part of the mission of London-based interior design studio, Designed by Woulfe, which was established by Irish interior designer Brian Woulfe in 2009. Since then, he and his team have delivered over 80 projects spanning five continents. The studio’s aim is to transform spaces into stunning visual narratives that also reflect their clients’ personal styles.

This Hampstead project is no exception, combining elegance and functionality. It combines light-filled interiors, vibrant colour and playful motifs, reflecting its occupants – a young family who love to entertain.

“The kitchen was central to this home,” explains Brian Woulfe. “We carefully balanced the proportions of the open kitchen and dining space to ensure it works day to day, as well as for guests. Key design choices, including the striking materials and colours, add a subtle sense of drama – from the marble tabletop to the large portrait by Aleksandr Ilichev.”

A marble island anchors the kitchen, creating generous workspace, with relaxed boucle bar stools. Dark, textured cabinetry and integrated appliances create a seamless backdrop, while expansive windows and doors allow natural light to flood through the space.

Bold patterns and confident colours were used throughout the home to created a cohesive feel. In the top floor cinema room, Woulfe used House of Hackney’s Artemis black wallpaper on walls and ceilings, creating an immersive space.

This attic space is defined by its pitched ceiling and inviting window seat. The drama of the design is offset by a custom-made curved sofa, which anchors the room and juxtaposes the darker wallpaper. At the back of the room, there’s also a bar to add fun and functionality for the family and their guests.

“Pattern and colour were key to giving each room its own identity,” says Woulfe. “Even in smaller spaces, like the downstairs WC, we layered materials – from Arte’s Mont Royal wallpaper to black and white marble – to create depth, contrast and a sense of playful sophistication.”

In the children’s playroom, the importance of creativity was emphasised, so the team designed a space that embraced self-expression. A long corkboard for artwork and knick-knacks takes pride of place, while a bespoke desk spanning the entire wall provides ample room for kids to play freely. Open shelving and storage bins are easily accessible. Bobbin-edged yellow wall slats add a burst of colour, complemented by the hand-tufted multicoloured rug which enhances the vibe.
