Take some tips from these Irish and international designers on what to gift and how to spend the holidays …
Rejina Pyo
All going well we will be spending Christmas with my in-laws in Dublin. I always love an Irish Christmas, with walks in the mountains and by the sea – no doubt it will all feel very different this year, but it will be lovely to be back [from London]. My husband always says I am impossible to buy for. Usually my Christmas present is something experiential, like an exhibition or theatre visit or a short trip away, all of which are looking quite different now. At least I will have my new line of face masks if we do manage to make any of those things happen!; www.rejinapyo.com.

This Christmas will be very different and very pared back – unlike other years when I like to entertain friends who return to Ireland for the holidays. Merrion Square is such a central location and so normally there are always chilled bubbles ready to serve. Alas, the year was very stressful for everyone so it will be a gift to be able to switch off and relax, to cherish the time with family, and time alone to think. I love the peace and quiet of my house on Merrion Square so I will be mainly found there, and when not, I will be in a family bubble with my sister Caroline.
Top of my wish list is piercing blue skies and mild weather for the Christmas holiday. Unlike other years, I won’t be travelling or taking a short winter holiday, so the thought of strolling around the city with Paddy the Schnauzer, and safely meeting friends in its beautiful parks, is very appealing. I would adore a long weekend in one of my favourite hotels in the world, Ballyfin Demesne in Co Laois – always a treat and days spent there are to be cherished; www.louisekennedy.com.

We will be spending the holiday season in Las Ventanas, Mexico which I am very excited about. It has become a family spot after getting engaged there and will be even more special this year as it is our first Christmas with our son Leo. Children make the holidays even more magical.
As for my present wish list: the Glow Kit from Dr Barbara Sturm and some new workout wear from Sweaty Betty are top of the list; www.mishanoo.com.

I will be spending Christmas with my husband and children at our cottage in Oxfordshire. I have seven younger brothers and sisters, all with children, and we will try to see as many of them as possible depending on the rules. The children all love getting together and going totally feral with their cousins.
We bought six, one day old, pure breed bantam chickens in March, at the beginning of lockdown. They are very eccentric looking and all have names and distinct personalities. My three children are set on making it a very chicken-centric Christmas – bantam films and photoshoots, Christmas cards and decorations are all being planned.
The best gift I ever received was a white 1971, Fiat Cinquecento (my birth year) with red leather seats. My husband gave it to me the year after we got married. I had fallen in love with Cinquecentos while in Rome during our honeymoon. This year I’d love nothing more than getting together with my parents and siblings but if that is not possible, then I’d love some earrings for wearing everyday; www.cefinn.com.

I am so fortunate to live next door to my mother so we don’t have far to go to be together at Christmas. Even when I lived in New York, I always came home for the holidays. I love everything about an Irish family Christmas – from mulled wine get-togethers to ice skating with the kids to mince pie afternoons. Decorating our home is a special time and one we all do together. We love our traditional decorations, using the same ones year after. I love Christmas music playing in the background – I favour cheesy and nostalgic tunes. Even though this year is a different Christmas to previous years, we will still do all the traditional things, but with less socialising and people around.
Present giving is significant for me – I put thought into the (Irish) gifts I buy and appreciate when I get a considered gift too. On my wish list is a facial serum from the Burren Perfumery, earrings from Stonechat Jewellers and Alexander Shulman’s book [Clothes … And Other Things That Matter] from Dubray Books. I hope that my new silk sheets and pillowcases will be gifted too – they combine extreme luxury with practicality; www.jenniferrothwell.com.

I am going to spend Christmas in my country house, a few miles away from Paris, with my husband and our two little girls. I feel freer there than in Paris: we can go for long walks in the woods with the girls and they can bike around the village.
I love to decorate the house in a traditional way with dark red, pine green and gold colours. I usually like to pick up vintage decorations and furniture from flea markets and I also have a wooden table, which I dress with antique plates and candles.
Surprisingly, I’ve never been a huge shopaholic, but I feel even less so in the past months. All I want for Christmas this year is for everyone to be happy, and for my family to remain in good health. As for gifts, I always offer friends books and I like receiving them too. As for what I’ll wear – I dress up for Christmas Eve and like festive pieces which shine and on Christmas day I like to spend the morning in pjs with the girls while they open the presents Santa left for them; www.sezane.com.

I’m from Argentina and have lived in Ireland for 19 years, so the way I spend Christmas is a fusion between the two cultures. The holiday season in Argentina happens during the summer time with Christmas Eve being the main event. I am lucky to have my sisters living in Ireland too, so we can carry on that tradition here.
We spend Christmas in Wexford, where my in-laws live. My sisters and I take over the organisation and cooking on Christmas Eve. We pretend we are all in Argentina in subtropical weather and ask everyone to dress up accordingly. We set a lovely table with fresh cut flowers and candles and play Christmas songs in both languages in the background. On the menu is a traditional chicken dish, lots of salads, fresh mango and melon, while for dessert a cake with “dulce de leche” is a must! Santa arrives at midnight so we wait up, open a bottle of bubbly and then we open one present each. It’s a late night but everyone loves it, kids included. What’s on my wish list? I’d love a floaty dress by Johanna Ortiz! www.landabags.com.

My Christmas style is extremely haphazard and random, as my husband Shane [MacGowan of the Pogues] and I are possibly the least Christmassy people you could meet! I usually like to have a real tree but the decorations are just anything that we find in the local pound shop – we may have a few fairy lights strung up but never in any kind of a considered style. It’s very last minute and not at all glamorous. I do love a bit of sparkle and shine but it’s more likely to be a glittering dress than a well-dressed tree. On Christmas morning, which is actually Shane’s birthday, I love a freezing cold swim to get the day off to a glorious start! As for gifts, besides a cure for Covid-19 and world peace, on my list is a Bella Freud gold tunic dress, a Nick Cave doll, a Chupi emerald ring, a Frenckenberger mini dress, a Toons Bridge Dairy tea towel and a camper van which is also a sauna; www.victoriamaryclarkeangels.com.

I will be spending Christmas at my mother’s house. We are not a big family but a very close one. There is no doubt I will be dressing up this year and hoping for a much brighter 2021, while on Christmas day I’ll dress down.
The best gift I ever gave was to my two boys on Christmas around seven years ago. They had been asking for a dog for a long time and my husband and I decided to surprise them on Christmas Eve. The look on their faces when they saw our Labrador puppy, Shaka, was priceless, while for me the best Christmas present I ever received has to be the vintage Omega watch that my husband gave me one year. It is such a classic piece and I wear it every day. This year, I’d love to get a retro record player. I have wished for it for the past three years as my old one is broken. I have a lot of old records and there is just something so special about listening to music on a record player; www.arnotts.ie/brands/gestuz.

I’m hoping to be sailing in Antigua with my family, as we haven’t been together for a long time, so a couple of rums and Christmas day dancing to reggae sound like the perfect tonic to dismantle the mounted stress of the year. I can’t wait to splash about snorkelling and fishing with my daughters; hopefully Christmas lunch will be a barefoot picnic with no frills.
I’m planning to buy my husband and I a joint gift – a Wim Hoff training session in the waterfalls in Mallorca. And as we are moving house (again!), maybe a colourful rug to keep this new homebound version of life, vibrant and upbeat. Pjs and sports kit is always a winner for me, as I’m playing more and more sports and loving it, feeling like a kid again. My dream present would be a ceramic piece from Energygloop, but given I’ve had my 40th and tenth wedding anniversary in the last couple of months, this might have to wait!
I want to support young and independent creatives also so I’ll head to my friend’s new website, vigourandskills.com, which is championing local artisans and giving them a curated platform on which to sell; www.zoe-jordan.com.

Usually, we are in Australia on the beach, but this Christmas we will be at Joel’s [Molly’s husband] parent’s home, so it will be a really cosy English Christmas. Hopefully it snows. Joel is the eldest of four siblings, and everyone has a plus one so, even with the immediate family, there will be ten of us. Hopefully Joel’s aunties and uncles will be able to come too!
Top of my Christmas list is flights home and after that, I would really like some new living room chairs, and a pair of boots. Oh and there is an Acne shop that I love too … ; www.desmondanddempsey.com

We celebrate Christmas the Danish way no matter if we are in LA or Denmark. We cook Danish food, sing the Danish Chrome’s songs and open gifts on the night of the 24th. I try to make everything super cosy for the kids. My mom always made Christmas so special growing up so I try to create that same magic for my children.
On my wish list this year is a Louis Vuitton Keepall Bandouliere 55 bag. Weekend getaways have been my family’s saving grace this year and we love being able to pack up the car and drive outside of LA for some peace and quiet. This bag is perfect for those last minute trips to pack a few outfits and hit the road; www.aninebing.com.

Sarah: I’ll be spending Christmas in my beloved hometown of Dublin. Christmas is now a bittersweet for my family as we lost my Dad last year. It was always his favourite time of year as he knew we would all be together. I’ve got the same outlook as him, so my wish list presents will be by the plenty, in the form of hugs and kisses from my loved ones, sorry, I meant elbow bumps.
It’s also a good time of year to take stock of what you’ve got and what you have achieved. It’s so heart-warming to know the success and support we have received as a brand, even though we’ve all had the worst year. We’ve resonated with a lot of people and hopefully given a bit of escapism or a bit of hope.
After an obligatory pint in Bruxelles on Christmas Eve [8 Harry Street, Dublin 2] I’ll return home, get into some oversized comfy pieces and won’t get out of them until St Stephen’s day, when again it will be comfort all the way. Wrapping up warm and walking around St Stephen’s Green with a hot chocolate will be on the cards in a massive scarf, chunky knit and our Anita Maxi dress [available in the Queens of Archive pop up in Arnotts] – I love metallics in the daytime.
Nicola: I’ll be spending Christmas at home in Belfast this year with my partner, Michael and our dog, Chippy! I plan to have plenty of beach walks in the day and lots of indulgent food in the evening.
I love giving homemade gifts to friends: knowing it’s unique or a one-off piece makes it feel extra special. Of course, my favourite Christmas gift to give and receive would obviously be a Queens of Archive dress. I’ll wear our Grace dress on Christmas day, Rosa maxi for Boxing Day and Gloria for a New Year’s Eve kitchen disco. On my present wish list is a pair of chunky boots perfect for dressing up and down, and some lovely skin and body care, for a nice long soak in the bath to finish off the day; www.queensofarchive.com.
Inge Onsea, Creative Director Essentiel Antwerp
I’m not the best at presents but each year we collect old stock and I gift it personally to the homeless in Antwerp with my children. I think this is my favourite gift to give as it gives some less fortunate people some comfort, while at the same time educating my children to be down to earth, generous, and to help others. My favourite gift to receive is some holidays where I can disconnect and spend quality time with my close friends. I will most definitely dress up though! I really rarely dress down, and even if I wear track pants, it will be with sexy heels. This year, more than ever, I think it’s important to dress up to lift our collective mood. Due to restrictions I will most likely stay at home with my immediate family and make it as nice as possible. My present wish list is simple: I hope that this current situation is over as soon as possible so that we can resume our normal lives; www.arnotts.ie/brands/essentiel-antwerp.
Orlagh McCloskey, co-founder (left) with Henrietta Rix (right) of Rixo
Orlagh: I’m going to be spending Christmas at home in Northern Ireland – I haven’t been home since February due to Covid-19, so a visit is long overdue and I’ll be heading there on December 20. This year will be very chilled catching up with my family and friends at home. I’m planning on taking some coastal walks in Antrim and Donegal too.
On my present list are comfy slippers to go with my Rixo pjs. I’m not one for lots of presents but I do love an item from my mum’s coveted jewellery box! I loved everything in it as a child and I’m slowly getting the pieces passed on to me. Skincare is also my favourite present – things you don’t spend on yourself – Clarins Beauty Flash balm and anything by Omorovicza please. I’ve just bought my first house so homeware gifts and lovely candles are always a hit too.
Henrietta: My favourite Christmas gift to give is always to my little nieces. Last year I gave them some one-off Rixo handbag samples that never made it into production; they wear them with pride and fill them with Barbies and lipsticks! It’s adorable to see. My mum is always great at Christmas gifts, some of my favourites have been vintage jewellery and last year I got a gorgeous vintage beaded handbag.
I am always keen to dress up at Christmas to start the day off strong. Our collection [with Brown Thomas] is full of classic floral and polka dot prints with fluffy hemlines, 60’s shapes and jewelled necklines. This Christmas is the perfect opportunity to wear something bold and fun to cheer everyone up; www.brownthomas.com/brands/rixo

This year I am spending Christmas in Cornwall, I hope. A few months ago when it looked like we wouldn’t be able to travel abroad we booked it. We usually have my parents over or go to them in France. Having spent so much of the year at home, I felt we needed a change of scene.
My lovely friend Caroline, who also works with me, has also booked a place nearby. She is from South Africa and this will be her first Christmas away from home. We are hoping to be able to get together as we are going to dress up ridiculously this year. On Christmas Eve we will wear black tie, and for Christmas Day we will also dress up. For both occasions I will wear something from my collection as so many items have not had a chance to go out this year! I’ll probably wear the Amour skirt and Emina blouse on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day I’m thinking of the velvet Ruth skirt and Kasia blouse.
On my present wish list I’ve been stalking some Chanel boots on Vestiaire. I would also really like a cosy, timeless dressing gown – a wool one, maybe, with a bit of cashmere in the mix in a really classic men’s style. I haven’t found the perfect one yet – as it needs to be easy-to-wear and luxe!; www.annamasonlondon.co.uk.
