Readers of THE GLOSS enjoyed a very special champagne tasting at Lennan’s Yard with wine editor Julie Dupouy …
Readers of THE GLOSS joined Veuve Clicquot for a champagne tasting and three-course dinner at Lennan’s Yard. On arrival, guests were presented with a glass of Veuve Clicquot Brut Yellow Label, the signature of Veuve Clicquot’s quality and style, in the cosy bar at Lennan’s Yard. THE GLOSS Wine Editor Julie Dupouy welcomed guests and spoke about the Veuve Clicquot brand and the fascinating story of the history of the house, made famous by Madame Clicquot in the 19th century.
Julie explained how Madame Clicquot was responsible for devising the riddling process used to filter champagne that was then adopted by many of her competitors. She also shared fascinating insights about a case of 47 bottles of Veuve Clicquot found at the site of a shipwreck at the bottom of the ocean. This discovery, 170 years after the champagne was first produced, allowed researchers to analyse the contents of a number of these bottles to learn more about the wine-making process in the 19th century.
After canapés were served, and glasses were topped up with magnums of Yellow Label, guests moved upstairs to the private dining room for dinner. It was here that Julie talked guests through the second and third bottles of the night, a very special 2015 vintage of Veuve Clicquot, and a Veuve Clicquot rosé champagne – in 1818, Madame Clicquot invented the first known blended rosé champagne, paving the way for a whole new process of champagne production. After enjoying a main course of steamed cod with salt-baked celeriac puree, sautéed wild mushrooms and apple slaw, followed by a dessert of fresh berries, champagne sabayon and raspberry sorbet, guests mingled and as the bubbles flowed inside, the rain continued to pour outside, making this special event the perfect refuge for Glossy readers …
