The End of An Era, Disney+
This six-episode behind-the-scenes docuseries chronicles the development, impact and inner workings that created Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour that quite literally rocked the world – do we remember the ‘seismic activity’ caused in Dublin from the jumping of fans?! Trust us, you don’t have to be a Swifty to appreciate T-Swift’s hard work, dedication and completely abnormal life. As cameras follow the global popstar everywhere, you realise how inspiring and encouraging she is to everyone around her (including life-changing bonuses shared with her crew). The series also spotlights performers, family and friends from Gracie Abrams and Sabrina Carpenter to Ed Sheeran and Florence Welch. Not to mention her now-fiancé, NFL star Travis Kelce. Worth a watch, even for sceptics.
Emily In Paris, Netflix
Emily is back again for season five, this time in Italy. Now the head of Agence Grateau Rome, Emily faces more professional and romantic challenges as she adapts to life in a new city. Just as everything falls into place, a work idea backfires and the fallout cascades into career setbacks and personal heartbreak. Seeking stability, Emily leans into her French lifestyle until a secret threatens one of her closest relationships. As ever, Emily talks herself out of trouble and we expect nothing less. The usual cast returns with Lily Collins, Lucas Bravo, Ashley Park and Camile Razat, but with another new man in Emily’s life played by Eugenio Franceschini (Reckless). We’re here for the fashion, darling!
Stranger Things, Netflix
The fifth and (apparently) final season of one of Netflix’s biggest hits to date is also back (after a three year hiatus) with the finale episode on New Year’s Eve. The now infamous cast – who we have seen grow up on our screens – battle it out for the last time in the Upside Down, concluding with its eighth episode, The Rightside Up, so it remains to be seen if it’s a happy ending! Millie Bobby Brown and David Harbour have been in the news a lot recently, thanks to Lily Allen, so let the drama ensue. Stay tuned …
The Abandons, Netflix
Set in the fictional Washington Territory in 1854, the series centres on the conflicts of several outlaw groups in the Old West in the US. The story focuses on a fierce rivalry between two families – one wealthy and established, the other outcasts – battling for land and survival on the frontier. The two matriarchs, played by Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) and Gillian Anderson (The Trespasses), must work together to keep control of their land. Headey plays a devout Irish woman who adopts four orphans and fights against European aristocrats claiming possession of her recently acquired home. Created by the brains behind Sons of Anarchy, if you liked that you’ll love this.
The Revenge Club, Paramount +
This new thriller series is an adaptation of the novel The Othello Club by JD Pennington, following divorce support group members who shift from seeking healing to plotting revenge. Their shared pain creates an unexpected alliance, turning therapeutic meetings into something far more sinister. Filmed in Dublin, keep an eye out for recognisable scenery. The ensemble cast includes Aimee-Ffion Edwards (Slow Horses), Martin Compston (Line of Duty), Sharon Rooney (My Mad Fat Diary), Douglas Henshall (Shetland), Amit Shah (Murder Before Evensong), Meera Syal (Yesterday), Chaneil Kular (Sex Education), Rob Malone (Rogue Agent) and rising star Aoife Kennan (Vera) – who we can’t wait to watch more of in the future.
It: Welcome To Derry, Prime Video or Apple TV
A prequel to cult classic films It (2017) and It Chapter 2 (2019), based on Stephen King’s 1986 novel, this series is set in 1962 in Derry in the US as a young boy disappears. Bill Skarsgård returns as the terrifying clown Pennywise and also serves as executive producer, with a captivating cast of children including Matilda Lawler (The Gilded Age), Amanda Christine (Black Box), Clara Stack (Hawkeye), Arian Cartaya (Gordita Chronicles) and Blake Cameron James (We Grow Now). Perfect for fans of supernatural horrors who prefer jump-scares to watching Christmas classics!
The Death of Bunny Munro, NOW TV
Based on the 2009 novel by singer and executive producer Nick Cave (his second after And the Ass Saw the Angel in 1989), this British dark comedy miniseries tells the story of a father who takes his young son on the road after his wife’s death. This sex-addict traveling salesman uses his door-to-door beauty products to meet women, but also tenderly captures the father and son relationship. Matt Smith (House of Dragon, Doctor Who) commands the screen alongside Irish star Sarah Green (Bad Sisters), Rafael Mathé (9 Fingers), Alice Feetham (Boiling Point), Elizabeth Berrington (Frauds), David Threlfall (Unforgivable) and Robert Glenister (The Hack). It’s getting rave reviews if you’re looking for something a bit different this holiday season.
