5 Boho Chic Pieces We Rate From The Kate Moss Festival Collection

A collab with echoes of the supermodel’s trademark edgy style …

If the news that Kate Moss has done another high street collaboration fills you with more cynicism than a compulsion to click buy, then you’re not alone. Generally, there’s a question mark over how much input celebrities actually have in the design process. In some cases, they seem active; in others the lack of creative input is often quite thinly veiled. In the case of this collection, Moss enlisted musician Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream, with her daughter Lila Grace and Gillespie’s son Lux modelling the lookbook shots … with a lot of the pieces already selling out.

The fabrication is surprisingly favourable, with blouses and dresses fashioned from pure silk. A pair of Bella Freud-esque tailored trousers are a linen blend. Moss tapped into her love of lingerie-as-festivalwear, as well as this season’s penchant for bloomers, by curating a silk lace-trim camisole and matching shorts in trending and flattering butter yellow. A handkerchief silk blouse features a floral print reminiscent of Topshop’s collaboration with Celia Birtwell.

Fans of Moss’ military jackets she wears with aplomb with skinny jeans and ballet flats (think: Pete Doherty era Kate) will be sad to have missed the now sold-out linen-blend corset jacket, which has more than a hint of New Romantics charm. A word of warning on the accessories: the stud belts, textured bangles and skull rings give off more than a little Captain Jack Sparrow. While the leather ankle boots with buckles are clearly reaching for her iconic Pirate boots by Vivienne Westwood – it would be far cooler to seek out an original pre-loved pair on Vestiaire or Vinted.

No doubt, we’re nostalgic for Moss’s peak fashion era of the 2000s – a time where fashion fans clung onto every look the supermodel wore, from the school run to her The Beautiful and The Damned-themed 30th birthday party – and her style was undeniably on point. It helps also that there is currently a healthy appetite on resale sites for her original high street collaboration with Topshop (which, by the way is set to make a comeback later this year).

One could argue that Moss pedalling festivalwear is a little uninspired. After all, it’s the way that she effortlessly puts everything together that we really covet. The notion of achieving ‘festival chic’ or ‘boho chic’ by numbers is anathema to Moss’s insouciant glamour. In some ways, the gap between aspiration and attainability has never been more glaring. But then again, the trademark ‘raw glamour’ that Moss embodies still has undeniable cachet. Perhaps it’s actually refreshing, in this era of identikit fashion. Stylist and internet personality Allison Bornstein admitted recently that one of the biggest requests she sees among her clientele is a desire for their style “to have an edge”. Take from the collection what you will – and, in the spirit of the OG ‘It’ girl – style it your way.
