1. A new season scent that stands out

The new Hermès fragrance, Barénia, takes its name from one of the brand’s signature leathers and is their first chypre. Traditionally a chypre is a warm, dry and woody scent with bergamot top notes and a woody, mossy base, and though typically a more masculine-type scent, here, Creative Director of Hermès Perfumes Christine Nagel delivers a blend of lily, berries, oak wood and intense patchouli, for a suitably strong statement that’s also feminine. “Chypre is an instinctively attractive scent, ready to be drawn like a magnet to the skin,” says Nagel. The packaging references the classic Hermès Collier de Chien bracelet design. If you’re looking to swerve this whole “demure” idea, the woman Hermès has in mind for this perfume is “not one to ask for permission …”. Forget meekly ladylike and embrace intensity and strength via a powerful leather-led scent. It lands in Hermès boutiques in September.

2. Stay wide awake with these under-eye masks

We’re seeing a trend for under-eye masks – transparent sheet masks just for the under-eye area to help iron out the tiredness that tends to accumulate there. I’m not a face mask fan in general but quite like these as you can just about get away with them on a plane, at your computer or to answer the doorbell – things I wouldn’t consider with a full face mask on. And September’s always a busy month, so who has time for a full facial? Cooling eye gels can offer a 15-minute quick boost while you’re doing other things, such as making packed lunches or watching Emily in Paris. Remember it’s often dehydration that’s resulting in extra lines round your eyes, so drink some water too.

ESPA’s Cooling Isotonic Hydra Gel Eye Masks (€46 for 30 pairs) are a quick and easy way to instantly hydrate, cool and depuff the fragile eye area. You get some tweezers included to help apply them – as these small masks tend to be a bit fiddly to get into place. With antioxidant Spirulina, Taurine (from red algae) and illuminating Snow Mushroom, they can help to brighten the skin around the eyes, and go some way to rehydrating this area, softening lines.

Other newly launched options include those from Irish-founded companies Poco beauty (€34 for 30 pairs) and Seoulista (€17 for three pairs); their Eye Lift Cryo Cooling Eye Patches come in Hydrate or Brighten options, both with black rose, and are singly packed so you can take them when travelling.

Charlotte Tilbury’s expensive version, Immediate Eye Revival Patches, launch today (€65 for 30 pairs).

3. Celebrity glamour

We usually steer clear of gratuitous celeb stuff, but look, it’s Alfie from Emily in Paris, the show that we avoided like the plague until getting ruinously hooked (Sylvie and her arms! The endless crazy outfits! Luc!). Alfie (the way he says “Coopah” is unarguably the best thing about the show), aka the wonderfully named Lucien Laviscount, is the ambassador for new Kilian Paris fragrance, Old Fashioned, based on whiskey accords. We haven’t smelt the scent yet, but we thought we’d share these pics from the glam campaign, and the elegant cut-glass bottle. Kilian Paris Old Fashioned (refillable), from €230, available from September 1.

Tom Ford Beauty has also played a blinder in nabbing Angelina Jolie for Tom Ford’s new Runway Lip Colour collection campaign, just as her movie Maria, where she plays diva extraordinaire Maria Callas, hits the Venice Film Festival. Makes us want to wear red lipstick right away.

4. Mighty manicures

Greet autumn head-on with a new-season manicure. Along with the joy of putting a coat back on (the dream is anything from The Landskein’s new collection at Brown Thomas), we’re heading to OSLO Beauty, which has three chic salons around Dublin offering a one-stop shop for every beauty service, from pedicures to massages and tanning (using Irish brand Vita Liberata). But what nail shade to choose? Autumn means a welcome return to rich dark shades for both lips and nails (Chanel’s eternal classic Rouge Noir is always the one to beat; try Essie’s Shearling Darling, too). An inky black, such as Essie’s Licorice (€10.45) adds an edge to any look this season – and for added cool, make it matte; Essie does a matte top coat (currently €12 at Boots) so you can mattify any shade you like. Head to OSLO Beauty in Mespil, Ranelagh or Stillorgan for a mini manicure (€32, 30 minutes), file and polish (€25, 30 minutes) through to a signature manicure (€65, 60 minutes) or two-week gel polish (€75, 70 minutes). www.oslobeauty.ie

5. Chic cover-ups

When it comes to complexion this season, concealers are where it’s at. We’ve just seen that Gucci Westman has launched a concealer (her Vital Skin Foundation Stick has been instrumental in making the stick format popular, and can double as a concealer on the go). Her liquid Vital Skincare Concealer, launching shortly, is set to take this most humble of skincare weapons onto a luxury level. It’s set to target dark circles round the eyes – one of the most enduring beauty bugbears for many of us, since so few make-up items make a visible difference, or avoid actually highlighting the problem.

We’ve already mentioned other luxe concealers such as those by Biologique Recherche – and another show-stopper on the way in a few days’ time (watch this space). And being a big Westman Atelier devotee, I’ll be excited to try this one out when it lands.
