Going For Gold: A First Look At Chanel’s Holiday Collection

By Sarah Halliwell

Chanel’s winter collection is always an inspiring mix of glamour and creativity. And this year the inspiration is a snowy sojourn to St Moritz, resulting in some golden wonders …

The just-launched Chanel Holiday collection is inspired by a trip that Gabrielle Chanel took to the Alps in the 1930s. Chanel returned to spend several winters in St Moritz, inspired by the beautiful light there. The Chanel Make-up Creation Studio drew on the contrasts that reflect modern life on the mountains: “the dazzling white of the peaks, the warmth of an interior and the shifting light between day and night, open air and indoors.” Think icy, sunlit days on the slopes captured in textures from pearlescent to satin, with flecks of gold.

My first pick would be the Sublimage Le Concentré Radiance, a luxurious take on a liquid illuminator. If you’ve tried anything from the Sublimage range, you’ll know it’s glorious, particularly the foundation – the very best there is, in my opinion. I save it for best. So I’m excited about this elixir which promises an “ivory-gold” glow. €115.

The make-up collection includes Neige d’Or, an illuminating powder with hints of gold, €90; a satin rose blush, for that “flushed from the ski slopes” glow; an intense gold liquid eyeliner, €44; an eyeshadow quad in Ombre d’Or, €80, with soft tones of deep brown, gold and pink.

There’s also a trio of Rouge Coco Hydra Gloss, in gold, rosy peach and white gold, €42 each, to wear alone of as a topcoat; 31 Le Rouge lip colours, from sheer white balm to a matte red that glistens with gold, €170; and Le Vernis nail colours in cool gold and icy white. Exquisite.

On the scent side, this year the classic Nº5 comes in a special golden case, complete with furry hat for the bottle. Smaller items include purse sprays for No°5 and Coco Mademoiselle eau de parfums (€195, 3x7ml). We also love the look of the limited-edition scented pearlescent body oils: N°5 The Starry Body Oil and Coco Mademoiselle The Shimmering Body Oil (€135, 250ml). Seriously indulgent.

Finally, there’s a new Les Eaux de Chanel scent available, Paris – St Moritz. Les Eaux is the collection that highlights locations important in Gabrielle Chanel’s life; other destinations in the line-up include Venice and Biarritz. This one is described as musky and amber, with fruity pear notes that soften to rose.  There are also some cute limited-edition pouches that make great gifts: think items such as the egg-shaped hand cream plus a lip colour presented in a neat snow-white Chanel mini bag, from €110.
