It’s not that black double-breasted coats (yes, the kind that went viral this season from COS and Massimo Dutti) are over – they never will be. But we have been casting an eye over to a gorgeously grey coat as an attractive alternative. It’s not that grey feels novel, after all, it’s around every season, but there’s something about the latest batch of grey coats, which focus on precision cuts thanks to the tailoring trend, that feels undoubtedly crisp. It’s not just about long-line styles either – although we really rate those from Massimo Dutti and our ultimate wish list piece is a tailored grey check coat woven in Donegal by The Landskein – a wool grey blazer is a signifier of understated cool. And when paired with low-key pieces like straight leg jeans, ballet flats and a white T-shirt has a very effortless polish. For winter, upgrade the tee for a ribbed long-sleeved one in a thermal fabric, or opt for a simple black turtleneck. Shop a glossy edit of grey cover-ups below.
