What To Watch on Netflix, Now TV, Amazon Prime and Apple TV This Week

It’s hard to know what to do with this unpredictable weather, but we’ve got you covered – from thrillers, to comedies, to documentaries, here’s what to watch this weekend …

Emily In Paris on Netflix

Season four of the hit Netflix show Emily In Paris is out now and if you haven’t completely binged Part One like most of us, watch it this weekend for complete escapism. Important to note: Even if you have been a dedicated viewer for the last three seasons, we advise that you watch the recap at the beginning – so much has happened. Spoiler alert: Following her break-up with London boyfriend Alfie, Gabriel and Camille’s wedding outburst/ending, and also being aware of their pregnancy and Camille’s affair with Sofia, Emily has been busy. And that doesn’t even include her work dramas.

This season Emily finds herself with a hectic travel schedule, and that means we get to experience these places through Emily: Rome and the French Alps are on the cards. Style-wise, a new element for this season is winter fashion, Stine Goya gilets, and new Parisian fashion codes. Part One is out now and Part Two launches on September 12. Heading to Paris? Boyzone (w/t) on Now TV

In the year 1993, when boy band mania had struck the world and before TV talent shows existed, Boyzone was founded in Dublin city – five working-class guys who were plucked from obscurity and thrust into the global spotlight. For the first time in 30 years, band members Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch and Michael Graham are granting rare and exclusive interview access for this three-part documentary series Boyzone (w/t).

The boys will reveal their personal experiences in a band that sold over 25 million records worldwide and both their highs and tragic lows. They discuss how they grappled with fame and how certain events in their lives have had a lasting effect on them for their life. The Sky Original series, produced by Curious Films, includes contributions from the late Stephen Gately’s sister, Michelle, his former-partner and pop-star Eloy De Jong, the band’s estranged manager Louis Walsh, as well as never-been-seen archive footage from the group’s early career. It portrays an honest and raw account of the devastating tragedy that struck the band when Stephen died – a loss the remaining band members have never fully overcome. The Decameron on Netflix

Based on a collection of novellas written by Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio in the 14th century, The Decameron appears to be popping up everywhere we look, so we feel we had better get caught up on this show. The first season is on Netflix now. The story is set in 1348 during the Black Death and explores themes of class systems, power struggles and survival in a time of a pandemic. A group of self-centred nobles flee Florence to the countryside as pestilence spreads, and as they harbour their secrets and hidden agendas. It appears to be very funny, charming and instantly lovable. Starring Derry Girls’ Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Sex Education’s Tanya Reynolds, Amar Chadha-Patel, Zosia Mamet, Jessica Plummer and more this is one watch this weekend. Photograph via Netflix.

Bad Monkey on Apple TV

Vince Vaughn’s new crime-solving series has come to Apple TV and it is truly brilliant. It follows the story of Andrew Yancy (Vaughn), a former Miami Police Department member turned health inspector, who begins to investigate a case involving a human arm he found while fishing. In true Odyssean-adventure fashion, he meets unusual and eccentric characters along the way and unexpected challenges, all while dealing with his own personal struggles. Writer Carl Hiassen draws the comparison of new Florida vs old Florida, bad monkeys vs good monkeys and this series will definitely introduce you to a few bad monkeys. A brilliant cast of Natalie Martinez, Michele Monaghan, Catastrophe’s Rob Delaney and Meredith Hagner, Bad Monkey has all the elements of fun, crime and mystery you might want.

Women In Blue on Apple TV

Based on real crimes and the women who solved them, Women in Blue follows four women who join Mexico’s first female police force in 1971. They defy the ultra-conservative norms of the time only to discover that their squad is a publicity stunt to distract the media from a brutal serial killer. This is gripping… Women In Blue ticks all our boxes for thriller-crime, 1970s style, and smart, strong women who take control. We don’t ask for much! Turn your subtitles on and watch the four episodes starring Bárbara Mori, Ximena Sariñana, Natalia Téllez and Amorita Rasgado. Photograph via Apple TV.

Those About To Die on Prime Video

As we enter our sword and sandals era (Gladiator II’s release, starring Paul Mescal, on November 15 is drawing closer), Those About To Die gets us in the zone with the first season out on Prime Video. Created by Robert Dodat, this poignant series explores the brutal side of Ancient Rome, the cruel business of entertaining the masses in chariot racing and giving the mob what they want; blood and sport.

Following Joaquin Phoenix’s epic, award-winning portrayal of Commodus in the first Gladiator – any further production set in ancient Rome must include a twisted, slighted son who strives for power and Jojo Macari does this excellently as Domitian, son of Anthony Hopkins (the Emperor) who seeks his father’s power over his older brother Titus (Tom Hughes). Starring Anthony Hopkins as the ageing Emperor, Game of Thrones’ Iwan Rheon, Tom Hughes, Sara Martins, Moe Hashim and others – this captivating production will transport you to the hard life of those at the mercy of Rome.

Lady In The Lake

Lady In The Lake on Apple TV

Based on The New York Times best-selling novel of the same name by Laura Lippman, Lady In The Lake is the new Apple TV+ series that not only marks Natalie Portman’s first foray into prestige television, it blends a scintillating murder-mystery with the glamour (or, perhaps, decaying) glamour of the 1960s. The story starts with the disappearance of a young girl and follows Maddie Schwartz (Portman), a middle-class Jewish housewife who strives to find her. It also follows the life of Cleo Johnson (played by Moses Ingram) an African-American mother struggling to make ends meet. While at first, the two women’s lives seem entirely disparate, as the story unfurls, you begin to see there is something sinister afoot. where to watch The Perfect Couple Ireland

Coming Soon to Netflix on September 5: The Perfect Couple

We simply can’t wait for The Perfect Couple to come out on Netflix. Starring Nicole Kidman, Live Schreiber, Dakota Fanning and the Irish contingent Eve Hewson and Jack Reynor of Midsommar and Sing Street, what an epic casting for what is set to be a gripping story. Written by Elin Hilderbrand, expert of Nantucket fiction, this story will fill the Pretty Little Lies and White Lotus holes in our lives, says Sarah Macken.

The premise of the new thriller and six-part limited series is as follows: a wealthy family, led by its matriarch, famous novelist Greer Garrison-Winbury (played by Kidman), gathers on the island of Nantucket for the wedding of Garrison-Winbury’s son. The setting is glamorous, but – as suspected – not everything is as it seems. On the eve of the big day, a body is found on the beach and, suddenly, everyone in the wedding party goes from guest to suspect. Equally, real life takes a turn as dramatic as one of Garrison-Winbury’s fiction plots. Sarah Macken has done a deep-dive so you don’t have to – read more about The Perfect Couple herePhotograph via Netflix.
