ON WORK: I work from my interior design studio, in Praharan, Melbourne, Australia. I set up my business, Coote&Co in 2007, the year I returned to Australia after living in Ireland during my 20s, when I worked for my father’s interior design business. Coote&Co now has a team of five working full-time. There are things I’m good at, but also things I’m very bad at. I think it’s important to hire people to be better than me in those areas.

ON HOME: I have an apartment in Melbourne for when I need to stay in the city, but I live in an old historic hill station called Marnanie, about an hour drive north of Melbourne. It was built in 1890 for the first Australian-born Governor, Sir Isaac Isaacs, and myself and my husband, Geordie, started renovating it seven years ago.

ON ROUTINE: I like to adhere to the saying “eat your frog first” – meaning do your worst or most difficult chore – a difficult phone call, complex design decisions or a boring but important tax/accounting email at the beginning of the day, when positivity and spirits are high.

ON MY DESK: Projects underway and at the planning stage, my reference books and the extensive Coote&Co interior design library, which is purpose-built and curated with samples of fabric, wallpapers, materials. But really, my Flower Room at home at Marnanie is my happy place – the primary purpose of this inbetween space, imbued with a certain magical charm, is to create happiness and to inspire! www.cooteandco.com.au @charlottecoote
