Leather jackets are always having a moment. But distressed leather jackets are shining bright this season. Why? It all started with Prada’s spring summer 2022 show, where lived-in leathers that looked like they’d been lovingly worn for decades stormed the catwalks. More recently, the Saint Laurent autumn winter 2023 show at Paris Fashion Week debuted vintage-look leather jackets with boxy, bold shoulders that nod to the 1980s. As an aside, the trend is taking off for leather bags, too – with thoughtfully weathered totes and carry-alls replacing ‘it’ bags for superior status in the accessories world. We say: the vintage leaning is always a good excuse to fall down a rabbit hole of some of your favourite secondhand and pre-loved designers shops. Because why buy a vintage-look jacket when you could go straight to a pre-loved source and get the real thing?

Scroll the new arrivals section of online sites like Vestiaire Collective, which seems to be growing in popularity in Ireland, or preloved fashion reseller Catwalk Gee that was founded by Irish born Anne Marie Gee. When it comes to shape, motorcycle styles, replete with zips, will always be cool but thanks to the Y2K trend, collarless jackets are a thing once again. Equally, the leather blazer is here to stay. Whichever you choose, make sure the leather is second-skin soft and the jacket looks like it’s lived through a good time: there’s nothing like clothes that have a story or two.
