FOR EVERY DAY

A toothbrush might sound like an unimaginative present, but it’s something we use every single day at least twice, so it’s a practical gift and worthy investment. In a recent survey, Oral-B found that almost 25 per cent of Irish adults questioned have not visited their dentist in over two years, with a further 17 per cent avoiding it for a year; particularly those aged between 55 to 64 years of age. You’d be far better spending money on a good electric toothbrush than, say, whitening strips that really don’t do much. Most dentists recommend Oral-B electric brushes around the €40 to €50 mark with a good pressure sensor, if possible. Personally, I’m wary of the jazzy marketing around fancy-looking sonic brushes. They might look good in your bathroom, but that’s not the key concern, unless you like getting deental work! We tested the colourful Ordo brush, for example, with its handy chargeable case, but found it was not even half decent at cleaning. The Oral-B iO range is more expensive than the standard models, but also more high-tech: the Oral-B iO3 (currently €80 at Currys) is proven to remove 100 per cent more plaque than a standard manual brush. Replacement heads can be pricey, but you can often find deals online, such as at www.harveynorman.ie.

FOR HAIR

Keep an eye on the Dyson website for deals on everything from vacuum cleaners to fans and hair styling tools; the latter easily being our most-used gadgets. My teen swears by the Airwrap and quickly became skilled in creating lush curls and volume. The upgraded Airwrap ID is now available (€570) with new attachments, memory settings and app to achieve a much more personalised experience. The Supersonic Nural dryer is also a brilliantly high-tech bit of kit that is quiet and quick drying (currently €380). Finally, the AirStrait is a dream for the non-skilled low-maintenance type, taking you from wet hair to smooth and dry in minutes (€450). www.dyson.ie

FOR FACE

Beauty expert Lisa Eldridge loves the NuFace, a mini handheld toning device (now €170.95 at Look Fantastic), stressing the need to use it regularly to see results.

The new SkinKrush LED face masks (€350) – choose from Rejuvenating or Clear & Calming, depending on your skin needs – are mid-range options to enjoy the benefits of LED light at home. Comfortable to wear, in just ten minutes a day, ideally for a minimum of six weeks, you should see the benefits.

WATER FEATURE

One of my favourite gadgets is the Aarke Carbonator (from €210) – the designer Sodastream at Brown Thomas. It looks good and works brilliantly, plus it means you’re no longer shelling out on environmentally unfriendly plastic bottles. I use it every day and find I drink much more water as a result.
