This Accessory Trend Is The Easiest Way To Upgrade Your Party Look

By Sarah Macken

A cummerbund belt is the cheat’s way to looking polished for party season …

According to the catwalks at Carolina Herrera, Valentino and Celine, the cummerbund trend is the simplest way to show your style nous. Why now? Put simply, it’s all the rage. At Polo Ralph Lauren, the styling of the show – which juxtaposed western influences and Native American designs with tuxedo tailoring – was a talking point at Paris Fashion Week. Printed cummerbund belts were teamed with exceptionally good black blazers and finished with silver medallion brooches that had vintage appeal.

Meanwhile, in New York, It brand Kallmeyer – possibly the most interesting designer operating out of the city right now – made the cummerbund appealing for the downtown woman who wears jeans to fancy parties and perennially has mussed-up hair. Consider it a part of the cool woman’s party kit, alongside beaded pouch bags, silk moiré scarves and a penchant for talismanic necklaces. Items, as Kallmeyer says in its brand speak, that feel “discovered rather than designed”. Ultimately, there is a subversive – potentially, empowering – appeal to taking such a masculine-coded piece and wearing it in a feminine way. The fact that one belt can instantly update an outfit, grounding your look in the now, is the cherry on top.
