These Fashionable Coffee Table Books Are Hard To Put Down

Autumn’s glossy new titles provide an on-paper fashion fix…

Iconic Photographers

Linda Evangelista photographed by Steven Meisel, Phaidon. This is Steven Meisel’s first monograph which features more than 180 images photographed over the course of 25 years, chronicling his work with supermodel Linda Evangelista. An introduction by fashion editor William Norwich tells the story of their friendship and situates it in the wider context of the fashion industry.

Slim Aarons, The Essential Collection By Shawn Waldron, Abrams. This luxe edition provides the most comprehensive collection of Slim Aarons’ photography with more than 100 previously unpublished images. It charts Slim’s field work as an army photographer, his fledgling days in Hollywood, opening the Life magazine bureau in Rome, and travelling the world photographing beautiful people in beautiful places for Harper’s Bazaar. In short, this book, published on October 12, gives readers unprecedented access into Slim’s private, stylish world.

Lee Miller, Anthony Penrose, foreword by Kate Winslet, Thames & Hudson. One of the most important female photographers of the 20th century, Lee Miller was also a model and Surrealist muse.

Together with Man Ray, she discovered the distinctive technique of solarisation to create halo effects. Essential reading in anticipation of the film Lee starring Kate Winslet as Miller.

All About Yves

For fans of Yves Saint Laurent, there are two must-see exhibitions taking place which might prompt a weekend getaway. In Paris, Yves Saint Laurent: Form and Fashion, is at the Musée Yves Saint Laurent, until January 2024, with a complementary guide, published by Thames & Hudson. The second exhibition: Yves Saint Laurent: Transparencies is at The Museum of Lace and Fashion in Calais until November 12. Of course, there’s always the chic Musée YSL in Marrakech too. Required reading before any visit are three new titles which document YSL’s innovative designs, from his modernist Trapeze dress for Christian Dior in 1958, to his geometric Mondrian shift in 1965, to his Op Art illusion prints.

His love of gold is documented in Gold, by Elsa Janssen and Yvane Jacob, Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris.

Yves Saint Laurent: Inside Out, Carlos Munoz-Yague, Thames & Hudson, looks at the designer’s creative world…

…while The World According to Yves Saint Laurent includes all his pithy quotes, (“Fashion fades, style is eternal” etc) in one glossy volume.

The Three C’s

CBK: Caroline Bessette Kennedy, A Life in Fashion, Sunita Kumar Nair, Abrams. Put your name on the waiting list for this book, out November 23, which pays homage to CBK’s effortless style defined by a love of white shirts, red lipstick, slip dresses and classic cuts and colours.

In Coco Chanel, An Essence of Mystery, Isabelle Fiemeyer, Thames & Hudson, declassified information reveals Coco Chanel was unknowingly enlisted as an intelligence agent during WW2 because of her British connections.

Fantasies: Carine Roitfeld Fashion Book, celebrates Roitfeld’s cutting-edge style with risqué imagery of pop culture icons.
