Tulip red boat neck midi-dress, €390; www.meandem.com.
Primary colours, especially cobalt blue, bright red and yellow, as championed by Bauhaus artists such as Josef Albers and Wassily Kandinsky are a feature of the SS24 collections. Several designers from JW Anderson to Proenza Schouler and Emilia Wickstead were inspired by these artists and their mood-boosting palettes. Worn head-to-toe or mixed up to dramatic effect, I’m looking forward to brightening up my wardrobe with Bauhaus hues, and in particular adding a red column dress to work this trend.

Black twill pencil skirt, €54.99, at H&M.
Sitting firmly on the other side of the spectrum from the viral short-shorts that made their way down runways at Prada, Miu Miu, Gucci and Isabel Marant for SS24, the trend I’ll be embracing is 90s style staples – and particularly the full length column skirt, it feels like a more modern take on the pencil skirt that works for now. The minimalist mood is a look that speaks to my existing wardrobe and I love how designers have leaned further into 90s nostalgia this season. Shows I loved include Proenza Schouler, Tove and (to my own surprise) Gucci by new creative director Sabato de Sarno.

Camel leather handbag, Miu Miu, €1,016.50; www.vestiairecollective.com.
The overflowing bag idea, as shown on catwalks such as Miu Miu for SS24, speaks clearly to me. The images, with shoes, cables, a spare pair of jeans all trailing out of capacious, butter-soft carry-all leather bags, have an appealing familiarity – however big the bag, things always seem to overflow (flat shoes, book, swim stuff, far more lipsticks than I need). And then the Balenciaga take, with endless keys and chains dangling from bag handles, also appeals – I’ve long kept my keys on an oversized clip to attach to bags or jean belt loops so that they’re always at hand. The prevalence of ribbons for spring, tied round ponytails or else worn as earrings, as at Simone Rocha, has led me to put the two together, and re-use some of the lovely fabrics, ribbons and trimmings from Chanel beauty packaging, plus charms and chains, to decorate my shoulder bag. This adds some colour – and the odd camellia – to my generally black or grey wardrobe. And I love the slightly chaotic, imperfect feel of it all. The only time I pack a handbag with precision is to get through the airport without paying extra …

Beige trench coat, Burberry, €280; www.shopreverievintage.com.
A 2024 trend I am looking forward to is the reliable utility trench, as seen at Saint Laurent, Ferragamo and Bottega Veneta. I have never invested in a beige trench coat and have decided it’s finally time. I wear a bright orange crossbody tote to the office so I think a great trench has to be the next addition to smarten up my everyday journey-to-work spring look – and it will be ready for accessorising on the weekend. This vintage Burberry 1980s trench from Irish preloved site Rêverie is one that has caught my eye. Stay tuned.

Navy pinstriped oversized blazer, €169, at Massimo Dutti.
I apologise if this sounds utterly drab, but I’d really like to get my hands on the perfect oversized blazer for spring. I realise this isn’t the most exciting new season purchase one could envision, but considering I all but swore off blazers during the pandemic (I donated at least three during a lockdown wardrobe purge, convinced I would never want to wear one again. I know, madness) it feels novel, if only to me. Previously, I had fallen for badly made high street versions but I have settled on a pinstriped version by Massimo Dutti, that is the perfect shape. The only silhouette I’m interested in is a double-breasted oversized shape. I’ve tried others and they are too long on the body, also I find the nipped in waist trend to look a bit dated on me (and not in a cool nostalgic way). What will I wear it with? Absolutely, everything; a cool logo T-shirt, a blue and white striped shirt, or a silk camisole for evening wear. It’s the wardrobe building block I want to get right and now is the time to take the plunge.
