IN PARTNERSHIP WITH AVEENO®
Scalp specialist Trudy Hayes talks stress, stronger hair and simple solutions …
Great hair starts at its source, says Trudy Hayes, hairstylist and trichologist with over 25 years of experience. “Our scalp ages six times faster than our face, but we forget that it’s part of our skin. It’s not until something goes wrong, such as hair thinning, falling out or becoming brittle, or our scalp becoming itchy and flaky, that we realise healthy, strong hair starts at the scalp.”
Built on 70 years of skincare experience, the AVEENO® Scalp Soothing Haircare range features six shampoo and conditioner duos, each enriched with botanical ingredients, from rose water to chamomile, chosen specifically to meet a range of hair needs. And at the heart of every formula is Aveeno’s signature soothing colloidal oat, a balm for itchy, dry or sensitive scalps.

IS YOUR SCALP STRESSED?
Hayes sees many clients with stressed scalps. “Hair loss is very common and often we are too embarrassed to mention it – we hope it will fix itself. People don’t understand the effect of stress on hair loss. Raised cortisol levels have a direct effect on hair, and can disrupt the scalp’s natural balance and lead to inflammation or shedding. Bear in mind that increased hair fall could be connected to what’s going on in your life.” She recommends adequate protein in your daily diet, along with vitamins B12 and zinc. “I’ve also seen that both fasting and weight-loss drugs can lead to hair loss.”
Cleansing hair and scalp properly is key. “If you only wash your hair once a week or less, you’ll see a build-up on the scalp, which will stop the hair from getting through the follicle. AVEENO Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo is gentle and clarifying, naturally exfoliating the scalp. Rinse thoroughly and ensure the water is not too hot, as that will aggravate any inflammation. Gently massage the scalp to boost circulation. Try a pre-wash – applying some shampoo to dry hair before washing as normal, to act as an exfoliant.
MAXIMISE YOUR HAIR-WASHING
Any tips on washing your hair more effectively? “Gently scrub your hair and scalp, not forgetting the area behind the ears, and remember not to use your nails on your scalp. Gently massage the scalp to boost circulation – but always treat the hair itself like silk, and be gentle when brushing or handling it. Rinse thoroughly and ensure the water is not too hot, as that will aggravate any inflammation.”
