The hotly anticipated Michelin Guide awards ceremony took place in Silverstone last night and it was a good year for the Irish, and Co Cork in particular.

Ahmet Dede of dede in Baltimore, Co Cork was awarded a second star, the guide commenting that “his sophisticated modern Turkish dishes dazzled our inspectors”.

Also in Cork, Vincent Crepel and the team at Terre in Castlemartyr were awarded their first star, “for making the very best of the local larder”. There had previously been much speculation about chef patron Vincent Crepel of Terre and whether they would go straight in at 2 stars given the clear Michelin sights even before opening with an advertisement for a restaurant director who could “consistently provide a two Michelin star guest experience.” After a flurry of excellent reviews recently, it seems the team at Terre are certainly impressing diners with the much lauded unique dining experience.

In Dublin, Declan Maxwell and the team at Spitalfields were awarded the Michelin Welcome and Service Award 2023 for their “genuine, warm Irish hospitality” while in Belfast, notable chef and legendary restauranteur Michael Deane was named Chef Mentor of the Year.

There had been some speculation that Chapter One might be elevated to 3 star status this year, but sadly this was not the case, while also noticeably missing was a star for the hotly tipped Lignum in Galway, another remarkable Irish restaurant.

All of the previous Irish Michelin star restaurants retained their stars making the total number of Michelin Star restaurants in Ireland now 21 after Galway’s Loam restaurant sadly closed its doors last year. The full list includes Aimsir, Co Kildare; Chapter One by Mikael Viljanen, Dublin; Liath, Dublin; Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud, Dublin; Aniar, Galway; Bastible, Dublin; Bastion, Kinsale; Campagne, Kilkenny; Chestnut, Ballydehob; dede, Baltimore; Eipic, Belfast; Glover’s Alley, Dublin; House, Ardmore; Ichigo Ichie, Cork City; Lady Helen, Co Kilkenny; The Muddlers Club, Belfast; The Oak Room, Adare; Ox, Belfast; Terre, Castlemartyr; Variety Jones, Dublin; Wild Honey Inn, Co Clare.

Well done to all the new star recipients, and all who retained their star after what can only be described as a challenging year for the industry.
