Gucci’s latest campaign celebrates the freedom to roam, to think, to reconnect and the quietly poetic, romantic ideal of enjoying winter in the park. As THE GLOSS team share their favourite spots, we have identified some familiar characters you may meet while on your local route …
Singer-songwriter Celeste, fashion designer, television personality and author Alexa Chung and actor Vanessa Kirby are all park fans. Pre-lockdown they were photographed by Angelo Pennetta, wearing the Gucci “Epilogue” collection, part of Alessandro Michele’s new “Winter in the Park” series. In the collection notes, Michele imagined a scene dominated by chilly grey skies, tree-lined paths, wooden benches and leaves scattered on the ground, all ideal for “a moment of reconnection with nature; a moment of personal peace.”
THE GLOSS team are park fans too. Siomha Connolly, digital editor, loves Iveagh Gardens, Dublin. “It feels like a little secret garden in the middle of the city. The open green space is perfect for bringing a picnic blanket and a book, when the weather is good, while the park benches provide the perfect place for socially distanced coffee meet-ups with friends, when allowed.”
Style editor Aislinn Coffey prefers the largely overlooked Sorrento park in Dalkey. It can be accessed from Colliemore Road and is actually an overgrown hill in the village which has a brilliant view of Dalkey Island as well as Bray Head, Wicklow and the Sugar Loaf Mountain. The Old Band Stand is worth a look too.
“I like People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire, with its sea views and Fallon & Byrne cafe with outdoor seats,” says beauty editor Sarah Halliwell. “And the grass area near Seapoint Beach has become an impromptu dog play area, where all the new puppies run off their energy.”
Irish National War Memorial Gardens, Dublin
Art editor Jessica Weimer recommends Bushy Park, Dublin for nature walks as well as the Memorial Gardens. “It has a beautiful rose garden and it’s a great place to relax by the river in the summer. In both places I discover something new every time I go.”
When I was WFO (working from the office!) I used to like a walk in Blackrock Park at lunchtime. Swans and a Peace Fountain, built in 1986 to mark International Year of Peace, are its main attractions as is the view over Dublin Bay. I also enjoyed weekend walks to the People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. Nowadays, while WFH, I try to beat the hordes flocking to Hillsborough Forest Park, Co Down. I’m not sure Gucci’s yellow tights, cream sandals or pussy bow blouses are really the rage up north, but I’ve noticed several style tribes on my walks, as you may have too.
Shorts Man: Started wearing shorts in Lockdown 1 and hasn’t given them up yet – let’s hope they get a weekly wash at least. Onlookers are constantly amazed how he braves the elements in his bare legs which, despite the constant exposure, remain a shade of pinkish blue. Perhaps Farrow & Ball could create a new colour – Lockdown Legs?
Jet set Jeannette: Loves to channel Kelly McGillis in Top Gun – aviator sunglasses and a leather jacket with shearling collar are her style signatures. Obviously she hopes to take off somewhere else and is dressing “as if” (see The Secret for further details). This is her new spring look after wearing out her trusty puffer jacket.
Timberland Tina: Bought her ski boots for a half term holiday in Gstaad last year and has not had a chance to wear them. As a result she defiantly dresses in her pre- and post-skiwear at all times. The recent snow even ensured the salopettes got an outing, though are a bit tight after Christmas and Dry January comfort eating.
Sloaney Susan: Alternates between her Lavenham or Rains jackets – the latter is the Prada of water-resistant outwear (now available at Avoca). Susan is never not in navy or her Chelsea boots, and as she she powers past you, braying into her phone, you overhear she has to get back to the Aga, where a muesli loaf is baking.
Tight-lipped Tanya: Clearly distracted, Tanya sees no one on her daily lunchtime walk. She is too busy having arguments in her head with various people – her partner, her children and her micro-managing boss. By the time she gets back to her desk, she is wound up like a spring and ready to explode. So much for the benefits of fresh air and a change of scene …
Instagram Ingrid: There is not a square inch of Ingrid’s local park which has not been photographed – from soil level up. Ingrid has been curating her “beauty of nature” Instagram feed and is having a field day now that the snowdrops and narcissi are in bloom. She bugs everyone with her relentlessly upbeat greetings as they try to complete a lap of the park and add an extra 1.5km on to their meagre daily FitBit tally.
Gorgeous Gilly: Invariably you meet Gilly when you have decided to go “au naturel” for the day, sans make-up or even mascara. Gilly is fresh from a dip in the sea, so is invigorated and buzzing with energy. Seemingly immune to cold and a disciple of Wim Hof, she is wearing flared jeans, a blazer and a large cashmere scarf. You look like Michelin Maeve in comparison. She bounces, while you plod, regaling (or is it humble bragging?) about home schooling triumphs and promises to share her latest fishcake recipe. En route home you divert to Centra for some chocolate…
