We’re feeling blue for spring – in beauty terms, at least. Beauty authorities from Chanel through to Victoria Beckham are championing blue this season. Whether you go for an icy nail shade or a surprisingly flattering indigo eyeliner or eyeshadow, a shot of colour can lend a fresh new look, instantly. Choose from cobalt to indigo.
While we’re cautious about returning to beauty looks of the eighties – at a recent school reunion, we reminisced about the unforgiving pearlised pale lipstick we used to wear (Running Bare by Miss Selfridge) – there’s something compelling about a great blue eyeliner. Witness Chanel’s matte electric blue eyeliner, which is somehow intense and Yves Klein enough to look gorgeously modern, rather than Agnetha-esque. Wear it with bare fresh skin and a cool or slighly coral low-key lip colour – something soft and balmy, perhaps.
Victoria Beckham has a great eye for beauty, and her latest Longwear Eyeshadow Stick colours include a fresh matte cornflower blue. I haven’t tried this out, but the colour looks great. There’s also a matte blue option among her excellent kajal eye pencils. Check out Look Fantastic for good-value takes on the colour, including Barry M’s, and also find Catrice eye pencils at pharmacies nationwide.
Blue mascara can be an easy way to experiment with the colour without having to overly commit. Try Shiseido or YSL for striking versions. And consider a metallic version for a different look, perhaps for evening. Currently €31.20 (reduced from €22) at www.trinnylondon.com.
