1. Poco Beauty’s TFD Brow Collection
The Poco Beauty range is going great guns, having launched with a popular one-stop skin tint, the Universal Glow Treatment SPF30. The brow collection is called TFD (The Finer Detail) and is both well-designed and easy to use; it includes a Brow Pen and Brow Blade, an angled crayon/pencil made from pliable Japanese wax (and with in-built sharpener).
Blade seems to be the new term for a brow pencil/crayon. This one is similar-looking to the excellent Victoria Beckham BabyBlade for brows (€37), one of my usual favourites for a natural-looking brow boost. “People are embracing natural brows again,” notes make-up artist and Poco creative director Lisa Shannon, who has thought through every detail of the new tools. “The key is that not everyone needs a full brow. Only put weight into the brow where you need it, not all the way through. The strokes should replicate hair.” It’s very long-lasting, says Shannon: “You’ll need an oil cleanser to remove it.” My caveat? I noticed “hydrogenated palm oil” in the ingredients list, which I find off-putting (this is a commonly used ingredient in cosmetics but its production is associated with environmental concerns, such as deforestation); the brand emphasise that “all our manufacturers across the range are ISO certified for environmental compliance and practices”. €20 each, at www.pocobeauty.com.
2. Sculpted’s new double-cleanser range
It’s a clever idea to combine a double-cleanse in one tube – Sculpted’s three new cleansing duos feature two curved 100ml tubes linked together into one. The brand says that double cleansing is the “single best thing you can do for your skin”, though you could argue that sun protection takes that role. Anyway, if this format encourages us to clean our skin thoroughly, then that’s all good – it’s one of the basic things we don’t always do right. There are three variations according to different skin types, so you can choose to brighten, exfoliate or clarify as your second cleanse. These are formulated in South Korea. I’m not wild on the plastic packaging, personally, and think it’s pretty chunky and ugly, but the brand do offer a recycling system via Terracycle, via post (five rinsed empties) or in stores, and you can earn points back to spend on Sculpted. The full system is €36 (for 200ml), with 100ml refills at €14-€19 each; www.sculptedbyaimee.com. Also available at Kildare Village, Boots stores and online, and stockists nationwide.
I’m not convinced, though, that they clean your skin any better than, say, the bestselling CeraVe (currently €12 for the salicylic one, and €9.60 for the Hydrating Cleanser, each 236ml, at Boots); you could buy two and do your own double-cleanse. Look also to the Skingredients cleansing range, currently 20 per cent off at Boots.
3. Sunday Riley facials to book now
Sunday Riley Signature Facials will be available at the Brown Thomas Planet Beauty treatment rooms (in Clarendon Street and in Dundrum) on eight dates between April 27 and July 12. The half-hour treatments (€60, redeemable on Sunday Riley product) are a way to try out the excellent skincare, if you haven’t already. It’s all about the glow, and the CEO Afterglow Brightening Vitamin C Cream (€65), an unctuous golden moisturiser, is one of my favourites. So if you’re about to replenish your supply of this or, say, the Ceramic Slip cleanser (I had forgotten how good this is, cooling and calming the skin), it’s a no-brainer. The facial includes a gentle cleanse, and lots of sculpting facial massage – you’ll float out of the store. To book, visit this link: www.bookings.brownthomas.com.
For a good starter kit, try the Wake Up With Me Complete Morning Routine (€75), a collection of travel sizes. www.brownthomas.com
