“I live in Copenhagen with my two sons, Miles and Valentin, and our summer house is an hour north of the city in Tisvilde, in a rural, very charming, calm area. This is where we come at weekends to relax and unwind from a very busy work life.

“When I first bought the house, I thought it would only need some painting, but I ended up tearing down the whole house. The new house is built on sloping ground, so I designed it over four floors which are connected via a graphic black staircase internally and externally, with a terraced wooden deck.

“Making my summer house a comfortable, very laidback space was really important. I purposely kept the colour palette muted so that the view from the house of the surroundings – trees and countryside – would take precedence. I like using very tactile materials like concrete, leather, steel, wood and glass.

“When decorating, I use Pinterest to spark ideas and to source furniture. When I find something I like, I “stalk” it until I find where to buy it, or search for something similar at flea markets. Next on my list is a big Camaleonda couch from B&B Italia. My favourite piece of furniture is “The Tired Man” chair that my boyfriend gave me. This is where I kick back at the end of the day and relax. To make a house my own, I like to add sculptures and paintings some of which I paint or make myself.

“My house projects seem to be neverending; I can always find something new to redo or redecorate. When I feel I’m finally done, I sell up and start all over again. I just love the creative process. I guess being a designer is not something you can leave at the office!”

Concrete floors and white walls feature throughout the house and the furniture, as a contrast, is very soft, plush and inviting. “Good design is about contrasts,” says Munthe.

The dining table, with a mixture of design classic chairs including the Hiroshima chair by Maruni, Superleggera chair and Leggera chair by Gio Ponti, PK1 by Poul Kjærholm, and the Eames Shell chair.

The large oak and marble island is the focal point of the kitchen, where friends and family gather while Munthe is cooking.

The master bedroom, which opens to the terrace, features a Hästens bed. Munthe made the pillows and sculpted the totems herself.

The painting in the bathroom is by Munthe who painted it specifically for the space.
