When packing your suitcase for a ski trip or even just contemplating what to wear for the depths of an Irish winter, good quality staples specifically made for cold weather trump run-of-the-mill winter wear.
Whether in the MacGillycuddy Reeks or on the north-facing pistes of Lech, layering is the foundation of any outfit in cold conditions. Consider a merino wool (sweat-wicking) long-sleeved base layer, a tech-fabric mid layer that you can add/subtract according to the temperature, and the best waterproof shell jacket you can find (this is the make-or-break item for insulation, so look for one that is breathable as well as comfortable).
Good walking boots are non-negotiable, and digging out any old tatty pair of socks won’t cut it – feet feel the cold first. Another essential element is a nice knit. Vintage-inspired ski sweaters with a 007-in-the-Alps vibe are fun, whether you’re hitting a run or not. If pattern is not your thing, try Fusalp’s innovative tech-fabric sweaters – this nice French label creates pieces that are comfortable and adaptable, to take you from slope to bar in style.
