The Château d’Esclans in La Motte en Provence lies just an hour’s drive from Cannes and St Tropez, in the Var region, where the majority of Provence AOC rosé is produced. The exceptionally beautiful château and grounds are rich in history – the original château, of which only the cellar remains, dates back to the twelfth century. The vineyard is known for its old Grenache vines which produce grapes with greater concentration of flavour than do younger vines. The other grape grown at Château d’Esclans is Rolle (Vermentino).
Eminent and innovative winemaker Sacha Lichine, born in Bordeaux but brought up in the US, bought Château d’Esclans in 2006, aware that rosé had huge potential to become more widely enjoyed, and to be produced in a more serious way. Already known for world-famous rosés including Whispering Angel and Rock Angel, the Château D’Esclans Estate range is one for serious rosé fans – Château D’Esclans, Les Clans and Garrus.
At the end of 2019, LVMH purchased a stake in Château d’Esclans. With Sasha still at the helm, the château continues to produce the most exclusive award-winning wines feted by wine critics and served in the best restaurants and the very smartest hotels.
