Have we finally reached peak oversized? Perhaps. The latest trend in blazers suggests something more refined is coming down the line. While boxy double-breasted blazers will always be popular there is a strain of fitted blazers coming to the fore that celebrate the waist rather than hide it, with a sleek tailored silhouette that nods to Christian Dior’s New Look. It’s an antidote to the XXL shoulders and swimmingly dramatic shapes that have dominated the last few seasons. Perhaps, a welcome one too. As one fashion insider commented recently, wide shoulders can overpower your silhouette, making you appear lost and fragile: the antithesis of a power shoulder’s true purpose.
In the spirit of pulling back (and in), spring’s blazers nip at the waist, as well as nodding to a classic, fitted shape. On paper it sounds traditional and yet it also feels undeniably contemporary. Just look to London womenswear brand Aligne which takes the hourglass shape across blazers and waistcoats in timely shades of buttermilk yellow. Equally, COS is playing up to the trend with unexpected details such as wide notch lapels, extended cuffs and streamlining seams that create a couture feel (see the brooch detail blazer below). The accompanying trousers are slimline and flattering, with a subtle kick flare. Plus, there’s a waistcoat to match should you really wish to commit.
Embracing co-ords might feel like a novelty, but spring’s tailored blazers mix strikingly well with jeans too. It’s the kind of high-luxury meets low-fi look that suggests an effortless kind of glamour. Opt for straight leg or barrel leg jeans and wear with a pair of statement earrings and ballet flats, or loafers. Shop an edit of the best fitted blazers below.
