Michael is the cinematic portrayal of the life and legacy of one of the most influential and controversial artists of our time. It tells the story of Michael Jackson’s life beyond the music, tracing his journey from the discovery of his extraordinary talent as the lead of the Jackson 5 family band in the ’60s to his relentless pursuit to become the biggest entertainer in the world.
Highlighting both his life off-stage and some of the most iconic performances from his early solo career, the film gives audiences a front-row seat to this tragic character like never before. Written by award-winning playwright, screenwriter and producer John Logan – known for his work with the industry’s top directors including Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd, Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator, and Sam Mendes’ Bond films Skyfall and Spectre – Jackson is played by his nephew Jaafar in his feature debut.
Two-time Academy Award nominee Colman Domingo portrays patriach Joe, with Nia Long (Empire) as his mother Katherine, and Miles Teller (Whiplash) as his entertainment lawyer and manager. The soundtrack features 13 songs spanning his early career to solo hits including material from the albums Off the Wall (1979), Thriller (1982) and Bad (1987).
