The biggest trend of AW20, find out how to make leather work for you …
Leather never really goes out of style and is hands down the biggest trend of AW20. While the message from the runways was clear: more is more, some people are still afraid of it. Not sure if leather is for you? Remind you of Olivia Newton John in Grease? You can look great (read: ageless) in leather, it’s the perfect way to shake up a tired blouse or knit. It’s also a really warm and durable fabric that will last for years but the fit is the most important thing when it comes to choosing a piece: not too tight or too baggy – a louche fit is best. Shop around for different styles, don’t always go for black. If trousers (wide-leg styles are where it is at) aren’t your thing, try culottes. Avoid a sexy pencil skirt and try an asymmetric hem or looser cut midi skirts (have a look at Marks & Spencer). A leather shirt (for layering) is a great wardrobe mainstay, & Other Stories use premium butter-soft fabrics. If you are in the market for a leather jacket, try Massimo Dutti. Have a look at the puffer jackets at Zara. Pair black leather leggings from (Spanx and at Arnotts or Sandro in Brown Thomas) and black leather boots to create a long, lean line with an oversized cashmere knit or shirt and blazer. If you are a vegan, there are plenty of faux leather renditions from designers like Nanushka and Stella McCartney. Top tip? Keep embellishments to a minimum: avoid embroidery, too many rivets and zips.
