We are taking better care of our skin. And this season the buzzword is glow. MAC, for example, has called skincare “Hyper Real” – the goal is skin that gleams with health. We can pile on highlighters, but at the core, this is about moisturiser.
Beauty marketing would have us believe that our skin barrier is leaching moisture every second of the day, and that we must layer on creams like cement to prevent this dire leakage. That’s hyperbole, but keeping skin well moisturised is clearly a basic good habit.
We all seem to love a rich, buttery cream now, from Augustinus Bader’s bestseller to Clarins’ Hydra Essentiel Rich Cream and the stylish No1 de Chanel Revitalising Rich Cream (refillable). These pillowy formulas can feel like a wonderful comfort blanket on the skin, with protective, buffering ingredients such as ceramides – natural lipids.
Texture is really more about preference, and devising your own sensorial skincare ritual. It’s more important to focus on what’s on the ingredients list, and avoid those that feature high levels of silicones or drying alcohol and fragrance (ingredients are listed by quantity, from highest levels to lowest). A serum with hyaluronic acid as a first step, sealed in with your moisturiser, can boost radiance. Rituals has a new Glow Line with a (refillable) Day Cream designed for mature skin (€34.90). Korean line Dr Jart+, famed for its Ceramidin Cream (above), has a new ultra-rich version that features five ceramides (€35). @sarahhalliwellbeauty
She is the queen of no makeup makeup and even manages to make a smokey eye look subtle. When everyone else was going for heavy contour and laminated eyebrows, she continued to promote enhancing your natural features with simple tricks and smart product placement. If you have seen any of her videos, you will notice how little product she actually uses. Even Victoria Beckham commented how surprised she was when she went to remove her makeup after a shoot with Lisa on how little product was applied.
