Halston X Netflix: Everything You Need To Know About The New Capsule Collection

You’ve watched the Netflix series following the life of Roy Halston Frowick played by Ewan McGregor, now wear one of the limited edition pieces inspired by archival designs …

Somehow wafty tie-dye caftans, gold lurex dresses and halterneck gowns seem very appropriate right now; comfortable and celebratory, they anticipate a summer of love, while disguising the corona-stone with admirable chic.

All these designs are the style signifiers of Roy Halston Frowick – originally known as a milliner – before transferring his skills to womenswear, where his use of materials such as jersey, cashmere and ultrasuede was groundbreaking.

He is most famous for reinventing the jumpsuit, the shirtdress and the classic caftan. His devotees or “Halstonettes” included Bianca Jagger, Elizabeth Taylor, Angelica Huston and more recently Gisele Bundchen, Halle Berry and Sarah Jessica Parker.

If you’ve watched the Netflix series you will no doubt have loved the costumes, designed by Jeriana San Juan, as worn by the principle female characters Liza Minelli, played by Krysta Rodriguez, and Elsa Peretti, played by Rebecca Dayan.

Halston is credited with forming Minnelli’s style and was reportedly responsible for her signature pixie-cut hairstyle. She regularly wore Halston’s designs for her high-profile appearances, including when she won an Oscar for best actress in “Cabaret” in 1973 dressed in a bright yellow dress and sweater.

Elsa Peretti, meanwhile, one of Halston’s muses, also designed the signature tear-drop shaped perfume bottle for his best-selling fragrance. Peretti, of course, became a jewellery designer in her own right, creating the iconic bone cuff for Tiffany & Co in addition to other designs.

Halston’s Chief Creative Officer, Robert Rodriguez has reinterpreted and modernised key dresses and designs as part of a new ten-piece collection. Noteworthy styles include the “Elsa,” a sapphire blue batik printed silk chiffon caftan. The “Beverly,” a red and fuchsia printed silk chiffon cascade gown, the “Liza,” a gold lurex silk chiffon sunburst pleated caftan and the “Anjelica,” a ruched viscose jersey one shoulder gown.

Explains Rodriguez, “Each of the ten pieces, named after the infamous Halstonettes, embody the luxe, sexy glamour of the 1970s and 1980s, an era defined by Halston. Roy Halston Frowick single-handedly created luxury American fashion. Halston has always had a tremendous influence on my career, in an industry where his imprint remains decades later. I’m thrilled to now carry forward his legacy through this Netflix capsule collection in collaboration with Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. It was exciting to recreate the iconic Halston archive dresses that appear in the Netflix series and reinterpret them for modern day. I am grateful to be part of this homage to Halston, who has inspired designers throughout the world.”

The pieces are available to pre-order on www.halston.com, campaign photography by Steve Taylor.
