Slow down and simplify this summer …
Do you ever consider how, as you get older, you actually like the things about an Irish holiday that used to fill you with despair – cool weather, simple food, wearing the same clothes over and over, rarely, if ever, going out in the evenings? The simplicity that restores to you precious time you usually spend fussing about other holiday matters – airport queues and the logistics of travelling abroad – and the opportunity to really unplug. Few choices and hardly any novelty have a way of making you fall back on your own resources. The Irish summer haunts of your childhood, the habits of holidays past, the episodes and experiences, deliver a powerful blast of nostalgia. Swimming every day, frisbee on a windy beach, board games, picnics and cousins coming to stay trump in your recollection the squabbling on a long car journey, kids sandwiched on the back seat, and the inevitable daily bout of boredom. You happily wore the same shorts and T-shirts for two weeks and your mother did not pack an entire “tablescape” to fancify family dinners. Dinner was not complicated and dessert was a block of HB vanilla, Neapolitan or Raspberry Ripple if the local shop obliged.
