The premiere of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was a chance for Irish guests to channel Barbiecore …
Be prepared for a “Kenaissance” with the release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie, distributed by Warner Bros. That was the verdict of guests at the Irish premiere, held at the Stella Cinema, Rathmines, ahead of its release this weekend.
The film’s cast also impressed and includes Dua Lipa as Mermaid Barbie, Nicola Coughlin of Derry Girls, who plays Diplomat Barbie, and Issa Rae as President Barbie.
The film’s costume designer, Jacqueline Durran, sifted through the Mattel archives hunting for vintage Ken and Barbie dolls for inspiration. Actor Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken, had his own stylist Mark Avery advise on his costumes which are another talking point of the film.
Star of the show is of course Margot Robbie, who is also the producer of the film. Playing stereotypical Barbie (blonde, bronzed, beautiful) she wears everything from a sailor blue romper to a blush-coloured gingham dress to a pink jumpsuit. Guests clearly took their cue from Barbie’s glamorous costumes at the premiere, many wearing shades of pink.
