Everyone’s Sea Swimming! Part Five

MAYBE YOU ARE AN ALL-YEAR-ROUND SEA SWIMMING DEVOTEE OR PERHAPS YOU ARE JUST ABOUT BRACING YOURSELF FOR YOUR FIRST BRAVE DIP OF THE YEAR … WHATEVER YOUR SWIM HABITS, WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU …

Several sea worshippers – both regular and seasonal – live at The Gloss and keenly share the message of deep sea vitality! As a result, we embrace and endorse sea swimming for its plentiful health benefits and social elements – but now, we want to know what draws others to the waves. Let us know.

Tell us in however many words you like, why you love to swim in the sea, as well as where you love to swim – have you got a favourite spot to dip in and out of? Do you gather with friends for a daily or weekly ritual? Did you pick up the habit during lockdown and have found yourself drawn to the waves ever since? Send in your entries to digital@thegloss.ie with a picture of you or your favourite swim spot – selected entries will be published on thegloss.ie and associated social media channels over the coming weeks. We look forward to hearing your sea swimming stories …

Rosy Temple, CEO Magee 1866

Since I was a child and mum took me down to Mountcharles beach after school (in the warmer months!), I have been hooked on swimming. Now that I am back living in Donegal after some years away, it is a joy to be able to swim every day and I do not take for granted the amazing beaches on our doorstep. Of course, it can be a little bleak swimming in the dark on winter mornings, but it certainly sets you up for the day! And although, the water may be cold sometimes, there is also a warm camaraderie that swimmers share, making it all the more enjoyable. @rosy_temple @magee1866

Corinna Nolan, swim coach and photographer

Swimming for me is just part of life. It’s my hobby, it’s my job and I love it. I started swimming when I was four years old. My parents couldn’t swim but made my brothers and I take lessons. I’m the one in the family that took it a step further and completed lifesaving and then my swim teachers qualification throughout school. It became my part time job through school and college. Even though I have taken a few different routes with education I have always held onto swimming. Now it fills most of my day whether it starts on the beach first thing coaching or swimming for me, to helping children with physical disability at my day job to enjoy the water. My day could then end coaching the local tri club. I think I get more excited when I see the progress people make with swimming than they do. Even my next holiday away is a swim holiday with swim trek. I can get into the pool and swim slowly or push myself for the next personal best or else jump in the sea to feel the saltiness and cold on my skin. You never regret a swim. It clears your mind, it’s my time well spent. www.corinnanolan.com

Deirdre McKnight, founder DeeRobe

I live within walking distance of Seapoint and go for daily swims there with my friends and family. One day as we got out of the water and wrapped up in our towels, one of my friends got talking to a teacher at her child’s school. Unknowingly, she was flashing the entire beach! This inspired me to create a secure robe that she could get changed under easily without any slips. I sat at my sewing machine and began designing and hand making the robes as gifts for my sea swimming friends. From the luxurious towelling bamboo fabric and elegant designs, to the convenience of getting changed after a swim, fellow sea swimmers began asking ‘where can I buy one of those?’ and so DeeRobe was born!

My group of swimming friends are an assortment of professionals in the graphic design, photography and e-commerce fields so I had huge help and encouragement. I set up my website and social media and began receiving orders for my new business. Each robe is named after one of my sea swimming friends because I wouldn’t have ever created DeeRobe without them. www.deerobe.ie @deerobesea
