Dublin has been named the best solo travel destination for 2026 by the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards Best of the Best, which celebrates the highest level of excellence in travel.
Out of over eight million listings, fewer than one per cent achieve this milestone title. Four of the top five spots ranked were European destinations with Berlin, London and Edinburgh following our capital.
Tripadvisor states; “You’ve probably heard that Guinness tastes better in Dublin (fresh from the factory), but what you may not know is that Dublin is a perfect destination for the whole family. No, we’re not suggesting you let the kiddies drink a pint. Instead, take them to the Dublin Zoo, to feed the ducks in Stephen’s Green or on a picnic in Phoenix Park. Scholars enjoy walking in the literary footsteps of such writers as Yeats and Joyce, while discerning shoppers have their pick of designer boutiques.”
In Ireland, the demand for Travel Department’s solo-friendly holidays has doubled since 2019, says Director Claire Doherty. “Many solo travellers are eager to meet new people and forge friendships while discovering new destinations. Travelling in a group can feel safer and more comfortable, especially for those who may be hesitant about embarking on solo adventures.”
Our travel expert Penny McCormick recommends The Chancery Dublin for a solo sojourn, especially its Terrace Jacuzzi suite, saying; “After dinner in Fawn restaurant, I enjoyed stargazing in this chic urban retreat – one intention set was to return.”
On her radar to brighten up winter days is a solo spa day just outside the city: try the Breather Weekend Escape For One (€195) at The Cliff at Lyons, Co Kildare. This pampering package includes a 60-minute treatment and three course lunch in The Mill Restaurant – perfect to treat yourself.
