In a recent post while on holiday in Provence, Angela Scanlon declared the answer to holiday dressing to be a waistcoat. “Roll it in a ball in your suitcase. Wear with cutoffs, white jeans, under a blazer for travel,” she said. It made us think: is the waistcoat the do-it-all summer piece we’ve been ignoring? We’ll admit, we’re biased. (Too many bad memories of the trend being done the first time around.) And some styles have that clunky nod to the 1990s that we can’t get past. However, scratch the surface and there are some iterations that may appeal. Pinstriped and linen are the buzzwords of the moment when it comes to waistcoats – see Mango, Zara and H&M: try to nab these styles before they sell out because they do, constantly – and what’s coming to the fore now are slender vests with elegant belts, relaxed ties and playful fabrications (see Sea’s white lace vest below for a shot of whimsy).
