Blue denim is an everyday essential – in make-up too …
We’re doing double denim this spring, adding a bold splash of colour via striking blue make-up. Denim transcends seasonal trends, and its ageless, everyday allure inspired make-up artist Valentina Li of Chanel Cometes Collective to create the just-launched Denim Collection. “Denim’s versatility mirrors the way people want to express themselves today: effortless, adaptable and personal. For me, translating denim into make-up this season was about capturing that energy.”
The result is a distinctly Chanel take on this wardrobe staple. “I’ve always been inspired by how Gabrielle Chanel transformed the everyday into something extraordinary,” Li tells us. “In the archives, I was drawn to the spirit of freedom that runs through her creations – the way she played with materials, contrasts and comfort without ever losing elegance. Denim carries that same attitude: it’s versatile and timeless, and moves between casual and elegant, classic and contemporary.
“For the Denim Collection, I explored the many shades of blue found in denim, from the richness of dark indigo to the softness of washed blue, translating those tones into textures that reflect light like fabric threads. It was about reimagining an everyday material through the lens of Chanel sophistication – modern and full of character.”
“Blue isn’t a traditional make-up colour, but there are so many ways to play with it,” says Li. “If you’re new to blue, start small – try deep blue mascara instead of black, or a silver-blue eyeshadow in the inner corners of eyes as a highlight. In this collection, we also offer greyish pink and soft brown shades to balance the tones.
“Try the grey-blue eyeliner pencil with a silvery shimmer to create a soft yet defined look, and the blue-pink highlighter for a healthy, luminous glow. If you’re more experienced with blue, feel free to experiment – you can even use your fingertips to apply a jean-blue shade on the eyelids, then layer it with metallic grey tones to create a washed-out denim effect. Most importantly, there are no set rules – make-up is personal and it’s really about playfulness. The goal is to have fun, break your usual make-up routine and express your own personality.”
The packaging is designed to become “a little accessory you carry in your bag or pocket”. “We really wanted to invite people to embrace casual chic and comfort,” says Li. “It’s about making make-up feel personal, playful and part of everyday life.” Forever in blue jeans … @sarahhalliwellbeauty
