One look at Harry Styles walking the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival and the message is loud and clear: the fashion suit is back. Styles wore a custom navy suit designed by Alessandro Michele for Gucci, featuring XL lapels and a distinct nod to the 1970s. 

It’s part of a bigger mood this season: one that says the suit is anything but corporate. Just look at the colourful spread of two-pieces on offer: there’s fuchsia at Zara, lemon yellow at Maje and bold mustards at The Frankie Shop (note the sloped shoulders on the blazer, below). Details are key: Claudie Pierlot goes romantic by embellishing lapels with broderie anglaise lace; meanwhile, at Gucci, a linen pantsuit is printed with a wallpaper motif featuring a recurring tuliip. 

The ‘go big or go home’ attitude doesn’t stop with the clothes, either. Footwear is key (and there’s not a ballet flat in sight). Our favourite of the season is the laid-back French inspired leather clog, which looks both undone and fashionable, meanwhile others will only finish a stylish suit with a pair of Prada stomping boots (Dr Martens do a good high street version). Lastly, if in doubt, slip on a mannish leather loafer.
