Liquid Luxuries: Four of The Best Champagnes To Serve This Christmas

This Christmas toast your loved ones with a glass of one of the world’s finest Champagnes from the Moët Hennessy portfolio, which includes Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, Dom Perignon and Krug …

With a bottle opened every second somewhere in the world, Moët & Chandon Impérial is recognised as a “must have” component of life’s memorable moments. Any party guest who brings a bottle of Moët Impérial Brut or Moët Impérial Rosé, in a stylish limited edition gift box, shows style and sensibility. Other sizes available include the Moët Impérial Mini, €25, and the Moët Impérial Magnum size, €125, perfect for sharing with friends and family.

Moët Impérial, €56, brings together an accomplished assemblage of the three main grape varieties of Champagne and the ancestral winemaking tradition that has made the global success of the Maison. While Moët & Chandon Rosé Impérial, €63, is spontaneous, radiant and enticing. Combining elegance and flair, Rosé Imperial is pink and juicy with the persistent intensity of red fruits.

Known as the “Grande Dame of Champagne”, when raising a glass of Veuve Clicquot we are in fact toasting the success of a woman. That being Madame Clicquot who dared to assume the head of Maison Clicquot following the untimely death of her husband in 1805. This season there are a range of gift ideas to choose from. Retro vibes, especially the 1960s audio cassette, have inspired the new Clicquot Retro Chic limited edition, €62.30. There are three designs – each Clicquot Tape has its own look and feel.

The Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Brut, €59, has been the symbol of the House since 1772. This champagne is the perfect balance of power and complexity – with the predominant presence of Pinot Noir while a touch of Pinot Meunier rounds out the blend. Chardonnay adds the elegance and finesse essential in a perfectly balanced wine. For rosé fans, Veuve Clicquot Rosé, €75, is fruity and full-bodied. It was Madame Clicquot who created the first blended rosé in 1818 by adding some red wine to Yellow Label Champagne.

When Joseph Krug established the Champagne House bearing his name in 1843, his dream was to offer the only prestige champagne every year, regardless of annual climate variations. Krug Grande Cuvée is the first and unique Prestige Champagne. It’s the blending of wines from so many different years that gives Krug Grande Cuvée its unique fullness of flavours and aromas, and makes it a very special gift to give at Christmas. Krug Grande Cuvée 168th Édition, €215, is a blend of 198 wines from eleven different years, the youngest from 2012, while the oldest dates back to 1996. A stay of around seven years, or six years in the case of half-bottles, in Krug’s cellars gives Krug Grande Cuvée 168th Édition its distinct expression and elegance.

The Krug Rosé, €450, was born of the House of Krug’s desire to offer the Krug vision of what a rosé champagne should be to those Krug lovers who had been seeking it. It is an unprecedented champagne with the same creative spirit that goes into Krug Grande Cuvée. Krug Grande Cuve?e and Rosé are available in Dublin from Just de Vine, 64 Wines, Celtic Whiskey Shop, Corkscrew and On the Grapevine, Bubble Brothers in Cork, McCambridges in Galway, and nationwide at O’Briens and other selected independent off licences.

As a vintage champagne only, time is an essential element of the Dom Pérignon equation. After at least eight years in cellars, the wine embodies the perfect balance of Dom Pérignon, such as the explosive harmony of Dom Pérignon Vintage 2012, €219. Although it took over ten years to reach fruition, the colour of Dom Pérignon Rosé, €380, is described as a balance of youth and maturity. Dom Pérignon Vintage 2012 and Dom Perignon Rosé 2006 are available in all good wine stores including The Corkscrew, Mitchells & Son, Avoca, Redmond’s & Son, Celtic Whiskey Store, Baggot St Wines, Blackrock Cellar, 64 Wines, On the Grapevine, Wines Online and Brown Thomas.
