WHAT: Future Makers Awards is a Design & Crafts Council Ireland initiative that recognises new talent and creativity. It’s regarded as one of the largest prize-funded design and craft award programmes in Europe with a €25,000 award. Previous Future Maker award winners have gone on to enjoy international success such as Michael Stewart of Standing Ground, ceramicist Chloe Lennon, jeweller Genevieve Howard, fashion designers Natalie B Coleman and Sorcha O’ Raghallaigh, furniture designer Simon Doyle, and ceramic artist and educator Owen Quinlan, among many others.

Charles Imperial
HOW: Divided into student and emerging practitioner categories, the awards cover a wide range of disciplines and recognise vision, innovation and excellence among students and recent graduates. This year’s competition saw an impressive range of entries, from furniture and fashion design to ceramics and glassblowing.

Ellie Dunne
WHO: Judges this year include Róisín Pierce, who operates across multiple disciplines with a focus on material innovation; Victoria Donovan, a silversmith and a recipient of the Kilkenny Design Workshops scholarship in 1986; Anneliese Duffy Fallon, owner of The Linen Shirt Company and founder of Fashion Connect Ireland; London-based artist Leah Capaldi; Brankica Zilovic, a French-Serbian artist and educator based in Paris; and Belén Llamas-Ferrier, an art framer who’s worked in the industry for more than 20 years.

Among those shortlisted in the Emerging Maker category are textile designer Ellie Dunne (@elliedunneart), jewellery maker Eve Doyle (@evedoylejewellery), furniture maker Christopher Touhy (@chris.tuohy.works) and metalworker Emmet Bosonnet @kopperkreation. The recent graduate and student category includes fashion designers Charles Imperial (@official_charlesimperial) and Giulia Johnson (@giuliajohnson_textiles) in addition to jewellery makers Lucia Whelan (@lucia.whelan.jewellery), Lucy O’Sullivan (@lucius_lune) and Otilia Mahu (@laleajewellery).
