Irish stars continue to make waves on the world stage …
Jessie Buckley has been nominated in the Best Actress category at the 98th Academy Awards, which she’s tipped to win after taking home a Golden Globes and Critics Choice award for her role in Hamnet alongside our fave Paul Mescal, who’s been unusually overlooked this awards season. If she wins, she’ll become the first Irish woman to receive the honour. She was previously Oscar-nominated in 2022 as Best Supporting Actress for The Lost Daughter. We can’t wait to see her dominate the screen once again in The Bride, which is already getting buzz.
Hamnet’s Irish premiere, with photography by Universal Pictures.
Hamnet garnered eight nominations in total, including for Best Film and Best Adapted Screenplay by Irish author Maggie O’Farrell and director Chloé Zhao.
Irish animated short Retirement Plan was nominated for Best Short Film, directed by John Kelly and starring Domhnall Gleeson – who, incidentally, recently made a great speech at Rachel McAdams’ Hollywood Star ceremony. We’re everywhere!
Irish production company Element Pictures, which co-produced Bugonia starring Emma Stone, will feel the thrill once again of their four nominations for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Original Score. They previously won when first working with director Yorgos Lanthimos on Poor Things and The Favourite, as well as Lenny Abrahamson’s Room.
Dubliner Richard Baneham (second from left), already a double Oscar winner for his work on Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water, is nominated a third time for Visual Effects on Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Finally, Blue Moon produced by Wild Atlantic Pictures and filmed in Ireland with Andrew Scott, received two nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor for Ethan Hawke. Roll on March when the Oscars will be hosted for the second year by Conan O’Brien, another legend who claims proud Irish heritage!
