Digital editor of THE GLOSS Síomha Connolly shares the vintage pieces that anchor her wardrobe plus the key style investments she’s made for autumn winter 2022 …
A new season, particularly autumn winter, feels like a turning of the page. The kids go back to school, the leaves change colour, the weather becomes cosy: it’s a moment that cries out for a sartorial change in gear. And while it can be tempting to overhaul your wardrobe with a glut of new pieces, we’re more conscious of consumption than ever. Is it unrealistic to think we won’t buy anything new? Probably. In the spirit of balance, we’ve created a glossy new series 2+2; where style influencers share the pieces they’re investing in for autumn winter and the forever stalwarts they’ll be carrying over from previous seasons. Up this week, Digital Editor of THE GLOSS Síomha Connolly (Instagram @siomhac) shares her favourite pieces of past and present.
“My mission when it comes to shopping for the new season is focusing on key pieces that will lift my existing wardrobe, so the 2+2 shopping rule sounds like a good place to start. I’ve always been a vintage and pre-loved shopper, but I feel I got quite lucky with the second-hand fashion gods this year,” Síomha says. See the two pieces Síomha is carrying over from last season, plus the two investments she’s purchasing this season below.

what I’m keeping

“There are so many things that I’m carrying over from previous seasons, but something that stands out are my black chunky-sole Isabel Marant boots that I got in Paris back in 2017, they have served me well ever since.” Shop a similar pair below.

Chunky leather Chelsea boots, €179, at & Other Stories.
“Another favourite for winter (and another Paris find) is this black oversized wool coat, found in a small vintage shop in the 9th arrondissement last winter. There are so many similar styles in shops this year, like this one from COS below, but there’s nothing like the thrill of finding something second hand so my suggestion would be to trawl through your local charity and vintage shops first – your purchase will feel so much more special knowing no one else will have one quite like yours.”

what i’m buying

“My first piece for the new season was a vintage Valentino blazer that was bought in Lou’s Lot in the George’s Street Arcade for around €100 in September (see below for a similar style). It’s a men’s blazer (which means lots of inside pockets!) and was the perfect fit when I tried it on, I couldn’t leave it behind. It’s a green/brown tweed fleck and has an intricate cuff lining. I’ve been wearing it with Totême twist-seam straight-leg jeans and block heel boots, and also a pair of boyfriend fit jeans from American Vintage at Kildare Village with Adidas trainers for a more relaxed weekend look.”

“I’m not short on handbags, but I was missing a brown leather one from my collection, so when I was visiting a brocante in Nice, in the south of France, in September I was really hoping to find a vintage one that would fit the bill. At one of the first stalls I stopped at I spied this brown leather shoulder bag from the 1950s (see similar below), it has three compartments and a lock closure, and it was only €40. I’ve been wearing it non-stop.”
