BE EXQUISITE
Over coffee with a pal as October settles in, we note with pleasure her lingering South of France tan, thin gold bangles jangling on one wrist, a string of pearls and two gold chains of different lengths nestled against her sheeny breastbone. She wears silver block-heeled slingbacks, a tiny tattoo on her tanned ankle. On the chair beside her, a blue toile Dior book bag (real or faux?) and a chestnut brown top-handle lady bag – it might be vintage. Her nails are painted with Rouge Noir; her scent is probably Byredo Blanche (“the ultimate”, says Abby in The Perfect Couple) and, when she rummages in the pocket of her Landskein coat for her phone, we spot a dull gold brooch with a blue stone on the lapel. We aren’t listening at all; we are planning how to be like our Brilliant Friend who always chooses the right accessories.
