Weekend Plans Sorted (For Culture Vultures and Couch Potatoes!)

Where: Bibiliophiles will be happy: The Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI) reopens today, Friday, May 14 at 10.30am, with a new exhibition on children’s picture book illustrator and writer Chris Haughton, curated by Sarah Webb. The exhibition is an opportunity for children to “walk through” Haughton’s classic story A Bit Lost, while collecting souvenir animals along the way. There are lots of interesting moments for grown-ups too: the museum’s popular Nuala O’Faolain exhibition, “Somebody”, has been extended and has moved to MoLI’s third floor, so if you missed it the first time around this is your chance to catch it. The Commons Café will also reopen and will be serving takeaway coffees and teas. The MoLI shop meanwhile will be open for click-and-collect from Monday, May 10, and will fully reopen on Tuesday, May 18. The museum will be open six days a week, Tuesday to Sunday from 10.30am to 6.00pm with late opening on Thursdays until 7.30pm. Pre-booking is not essential but is strongly recommended to guarantee your time slot; www.moli.ie.

Who: All anyone will be talking about this weekend is the new Netflix series Halston, starring Ewan MacGregor in the titular role of the American designer, which launches today. Having been lucky to see a preview, this series has plenty of decadence, disco dancing and diva-like behaviour. More confronting – Halston’s reliance on male prostitutes and cocaine. Oh, and lots of orchids – Halston’s annual floral budget ran to hundreds of thousands of dollars – though he was ahead of the trend for phelanopsis. To find out more about the designer read my post herewww.netflix.com

Why: Two re-openings are perfect for all the family: The Aquarium at Sea Life Bray reopens on Saturday, May 15 when visitors are sure to be mesmerised by its underwater zones. It’s a chance to discover the array of amazing creatures sea stars to sharks. General Manager Pat Ó Súilleabháin says: “We can’t wait to finally reopen on Saturday May 15 and get back to doing what we do best – creating magical experiences for our guests. Our attraction holds the Fáilte Ireland Covid-19 Safety Charter, and we have a raft of safety precautions in place including online pre-booking, social distancing, and capacity reductions.” Pre-book tickets are now on sale from: www.sealife.ie.

Wildlands adventure park, ten minutes from Galway City on the N59 to Clifden and Connemara, has also reopened its outdoor facilities. For thrill seekers, adults and children alike it features a spectacular  Zip ‘n’ Trek, archery, disc golf, and some new activities for three to six-year-olds. In addition, it has serene woodlands walks, along Ballyquirke lake shore, fairy trails and much more. Its Olive Tree Kitchen and food vans will be open for homemade, takeout food and drinks; www.wildlands.ie.

How: about some theatre? Gate At Home is a new artistic initiative of bespoke productions streamed from the Gate Creative Studio re-creating a distinctive performance experience viewable from home. Why not watch The Visiting Hour by Frank McGuinness, directed by Caitríona McLaughlin available for video-on-demand to local and international audiences until Sunday May 23. This moving play, written by Frank McGuinness during lockdown, is about an elderly father (Stephen Rea) who suffers from dementia and his daughter (Judith Roddy). It takes place at visiting hour in a nursing home during the pandemic. Because of social distancing, the daughter is perched outside a window: they sing and argue, and find common ground, their profound love apparent, until the visiting hour is up. Tickets for video-on-demand are from €15, available from www.gatetheatre.ie.

What: Following its sellout Aimsir-at-Home restaurant box, the Michelin-starred team is launching Aimsir Garden. A little playful, a lot delicious, this casual offering begins with “The Starter Box” perfect for haute barbecues. The box includes sourdough flatbread stuffed with handmade Cáis na Tire sheep cheese and wild garlic leaf, a garden leaf salad, roasted bog carrots dressed in chamomile pickle and heather oil, celeriac remoulade, Drummond House asparagus and wild garlic mayonnaise. You can choose your fish, meat or vegetarian additions with assorted sides; the caramelised onion ketchup is not to be missed, apparently. The Aimsir Garden Box will run for three weeks only with the first box on sale this Friday, May 14 at noon with collection or delivery the following week. The Starter Box serves two people and is priced at €38 with meat, fish and vegetarian additions from €9 – €18. One to two additions per person is recommended. www.aimsir.ie
