Looking after yourself and getting back into a treatment routine after all the ups and downs of the past year is important for your own wellbeing and self-esteem. And at Dundrum Town Centre, it will be a real pleasure, not a chore. Read on for top tips from skin and hair experts …

Mind Yourself

“The past twelve months have disrupted us all,” says Edvard & Pink day spa and salon founder Anita Murray. “We have experienced a strange confinement; something we never could have dreamed of! Video calls and digital platforms have enabled us to see each other, as well as looking that bit closer at ourselves. The reflection of our own image on digital screens had led to a greater concern for self-care, and our physical appearance. Without a doubt we want to look and feel good from the inside out. But now is the time for optimism, to allow ourselves little moments of indulgence. Book a massage, a facial. Right now, if looking after our whole selves reinforces better self-esteem and lowers stress levels, it’s to be whole-heartedly encouraged.”

Simple Steps

Take a few simple steps in order to take care of your skin throughout the winter season, says salon manager Gerda Anilionyte at Skinfull Affairs. “Drink plenty of water, and reduce time spent in the shower as hot water can dehydrate your skin,” she says. “Don’t forget to use an SPF. The UV rays hiding behind the clouds can still damage the skin. Choose the correct cleanser: if your skin is feeling tight after using your daily cleanser, this is a sign you need to switch to something more hydrating. Exfoliation is important but be careful to ensure skin is not over-exfoliated, especially in winter, when it is already compromised due to colder weather.”

Expert Exfoliation

At Edvard & Pink, Anita Murray is excited about the new Skeyndor Probiome Peel which is suitable for even the most sensitive of skin. “In the quest for glowing skin, proper exfoliation is the most important step but if you’ve been scrubbing and over-stimulating your skin you could trigger the same dry, inflamed skin you are trying to avoid. There is a beneficial invisible ecosystem living on our body that is made up of microorganisms and is fundamental for skin health: the microbiome. Maintaining a balance is crucial to ensuring that the microbiome acts as a line of defence against external aggressions and boosts the skin’s ability to recover. Its maintenance is essential for the proper functioning of the skin as well as preventing dermatological problems such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.”

Chemical peels often leave the skin exposed and vulnerable. “The new Probiome Peel from Skeyndor is complemented by acids with an innovative multibiotic complex to restore the skin’s balance,” says Murray. “We have five personalised peels for all skin types, even the most sensitive.” Skeyndor MicroBiome Personalised Peel, €150 (Includes seven-day restoring home kit) at Edvard & Pink (Level 4,5 and 6).

Lockdown Face and Tech Neck

“Although we might have been looking after ourselves, the pandemic has brought on what is known as, ‘lockdown face’ – yes this is actually a thing!”

“As the name suggests, tech neck is repeatedly hanging your head down and forward to look at your phone or computer screen. The extra weight allows the muscles to lock down, leading to tension headaches, migraines, jaw pain and tightness in your back. The skin on the neck is one of the most delicate areas on your body with a relatively thin dermis layer and therefore less collagen and elastin. Be vigilant when applying your SPF and bring it right down to your neck. Incorporate a good antioxidant serum or dedicated neck cream to help retain elasticity and tighten the skin. We love the Global Lift Contour face and neck cream, one of our current bestsellers.” Global Lift Contour face and neck cream, €103, at Edvard & Pink.

Target Tired Eyes

“Our eyes have been affected by hours of screentime and disrupted sleeping patterns. People have also been very anxious and have developed worry lines around their eyes as a result.”

“Working at a computer for long hours can lead to dry eyes. The blue light given out from these devices, particularly after 7pm, can also disrupt the production of melatonin which is activated in the brain around 9pm, to tell our bodies to slow down, to rest and repair. If this hormone is not in balance, it will disrupt our sleep patterns.”

“Try a day cream with a protection against blue light. I love the Skeyndor SPF 30 with Blue Light Technology. It protects by directly blocking HEVis light rays, known as blue light, as well as UVB, UVA and IR rays.” Skeyndor SPF 30 with Blue Light Technology, €57, at Edvard & Pink.

Wrap Up in Comforting Layers

At Dermalogica at Harvey Nichols, specialists stress the importance of layering. Yes, much like dressing for colder weather, think layers when it comes to keeping skin healthy and glowing all winter long. Layering on extra hydration during colder months will restore lost moisture and relieve dry, thirsty skin.

First, cleanse with Intensive Moisture Cleanser a light, creamy cleanser enhanced with BioReplenish Complex which removes impurities while actively nourishing dry, depleted skin (€67.50). Add Multi-Active Toner, a refreshing toner that rehydrates with aloe vera and cucumber (€45). Mist over skin after cleansing to reduce tightness and lock in moisture. Follow with Intensive Moisture Balance, an ultra-nourishing moisturiser which restores lipid balance in dry, depleted skin (€49). For an added boost, apply Melting Moisture Masque, an extremely moisturising masque which transforms from balm to oil (€69). Activated by skin’s natural heat, the MeltingPoint Complex delivers a satisfying melting sensation as it penetrates skin’s surface layers to deeply nourish and rehydrate.

Using Retinol Safely

Kiehls has recently launched Retinol Skin-Renewing Daily Micro-Dose Serum, which uses advanced micro-dosing technology to ensure that pure retinol steadily accelerates skin surface turnover while minimising discomforting side-effects. This formula also includes ceramides to help fortify the skin barrier and buffer against dryness and irritation, and peptides to help support retinol’s skin-firming actions. It visibly improves firmness, reduces wrinkles and refines texture while minimising redness, dryness and peeling.

The vegan formula is created not just for efficacy but also for a Future Made Better™. It’s free of silicones, parabens, dyes, fragrance, and mineral oil, and is packaged in an FSC-certified carton.

Apply one pump to clean, dry skin in the evening before your moisturiser. Also apply one pump each to the neck, décolleté and back of hands. Retinol Skin-Renewing Daily Micro-Dose Serum, €68.50, at Kiehls (Level 1).

Go Gently

At Skinfull Affairs, Ecooking, a Danish brand producing cosmetics made with natural, gentle ingredients, is focused on solving skin problems effectively while being kind to the environment.

Ecooking Day Cream provides your skin with long-lasting moisture and nourishment. And at the same time minimises fine lines and prevents signs of ageing with super-moisturising ingredients such as Hyadisine. Hydasine has some of the same properties as hyaluronic acid, working as a magnet for moisture and helping your skin retain as much water as possible to ensure it appears hydrated, healthy and plump. Ecooking Day Cream, €39.95, at Skinfull Affairs.

Pair this with Ecooking Night Cream which has Argireline as one of its ingredients which in turn has six natural amino acids to help reduce the depth of fine lines. Ecooking Night Cream, €39.95, at Skinfull Affairs.

At Skinfull Affairs, we recommend using a serum that is suitable for your exact skin type underneath your daily moisturiser, especially during the winter season. Serums deliver active ingredients to the skin quickly. At Skinfull Affairs we have several serums to choose from to help tackle all sorts of skin challenges, including Moisturizing Serum, for all ages and all skin types, €59; Vitamin E Serum Boost which repairs your skin and is also suitable for all skin types and ages, €59; Vitamin A Serum capsules, which give a collagen boost for effective anti-ageing, €55; Super Serum, if you are 35+ and want intense moisture care and to fight signs of aging at the same time, €59; Acne Serum, for those who suffer from oily acne. This serum prevents bacteria from thriving on your skin, €59. All these serums become even more effective in tandem with with Ecooking Derma Rollers, €44, at Skinfull Affairs (Level 2).

Seasonal Changes

Denise Cronin, Environ counter manager at Harvey Nichols, decribes how seasonal changes affect the skin. “Colder temperatures, harsh winds, central heating and dry air can hugely impact our skins protective barrier. Feeding the skin with an omega oil supplement such as Environ Advanced Nutrition Programme Skin Omegas+ as well as topically applying vitamin A will help maintain the skins lipid layer.” Cronin recommends Environ gift sets, the Environ Youth Essentia Ultimate Skincare Set, €315; and the Environ Skin Essential Healthy Skincare Set, €223, as well as the Healthy Future Skin supplement, €94, all at Harvey Nichols.

Better Sleep for Better Skin

Lorna Green, national training manager at Sisley, also at Harvey Nichols, agrees. “In winter your skin naturally becomes dryer, so it is vital to support the dermal layer while also protecting and sealing the hydrolipidic film which keeps the moisture within our skin. All Day All Year ensures the skin’s complete protection from environmental damage during the winter months.” Green also recommends Sisley’s Velvet Sleeping mask which keeps the epidermis of the skin hydrated for a long period of time. Sisley All Day All Year, €355, at Harvey Nichols.

A Hair Care Re-set

The team at H by Gareth Bromell at Harvey Nichols has good advice for re-setting your haircare routine. They find clients returning to the salon after the summer holidays with hair that lacks lustre and shine, tones that have become brassy from sea-swimming and a build-up of minerals in the hair. “We can get these clients back on track with treatments that will transform your hair from ‘Oh no’ to ‘WOW’,” says Bromell.

The Metal Detox

Excess copper inside the fibres of the hair can create a risk of breakage and negatively impact colour results during colour services. A Metal Detox pre-treatment helps to neutralise excess and protect the hair. Because the formula penetrates inside the fibre, the colour result is even and hair is intensely shiny.

The Permanent Blowdry

As weather becomes damper, this treatment will tame even the frizziest hair. The Smoothing System is a revolutionary treatment that eliminates up to 95 per cent of frizz and curls. Its formula is enriched with white clay and cocoa oil which provide rich conditioning and frizz reduction, promoting an elegant transformation of your hair, with a sleek, smooth, and radiant finish. This product is cruelty free and 100 per cent vegan. Bookings for all hair care treatments and colour service can be made at www.hbygarethbromell.com, or call 01 291 0442.
